2014 Emmys, A Good Night For Modern Family, Sherlock and Breaking Bad – What’s Hot and What’s Trending 26 August 2014

Sofia Vergara – Oops!

2014 Emmys, A Good Night For Modern Family, Sherlock and Breaking Bad – last night’s Emmy Awards proved to be a good night for the UK’s Sherlock series but although the show picked up 3 of the main awards there was not much else to cheer UK actors or tv producers.

Sherlock finally won over its US audience and emerged with Emmy wins for its lead actors Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and Steven Moffat, the show’s writer.

It was another triumphant evening for the brilliant Breaking Bad, which saw the show pick up the evening’s most prestigious award, Outstanding Drama Series, in its final year. It also won the awards for Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Bryan Cranston), Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (Aaron Paul) and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (Anna Gunn).

In the comedy categories Modern Family did best of all the series with wins in the Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series (Gail Mancuso) and Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series(Ty Burrell) categories.

As was expected The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons once again took home the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, with Julia Louis-Dreyfus again winning the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series award for her role in Veep.

It was another big night on the red carpet and there were as usual some winners and some losers. Without much doubt last night was a big win for the colour red which seemed to be the most on trend choice of colour for the celebs who were invited to the Emmys. Amongst those choosing red, or  a shade of that colour, were Mad Men actresses Christina Hendricks and January Jones as well as Heidi Klum, Kaley Cuoco, Claire Danes and award-winner Julia Louis-Dreyfuss.

Modern Family star Sofia Vergara turned up without her boyfriend Joe Manganiello and joked that she hadn’t brought him because he was too sexy and would be a distraction.

Sofia’s evening turned out to be a little more interesting than she might have liked as she suffered a nip-slip wardrobe malfunction at the after party whilst she was being spun round on the dancefloor by Dancing Withe Stars’ Derek Hough.

2014 Emmy Nominations – What’s Hot and What’s Trending 10 July 2014

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in Sherlock

2014 Emmy Nominations – this morning saw the release of the lists containing this year’s Emmy nominations with Game of Thrones looking to be an early front-runner for most successful show this year.

Game of Thrones is nominated in a very impressive 19 categories with the next biggest collection of nominations this year going to critics and viewers favourite Breaking Bad, which picked up 16 nominations one of which, like Game of Thrones, was for Best Drama.

As far as the comedy categories go there are the usual 3 big hitters The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family and Veep. All 3 of these shows are nominated for Best Comedy with several other individual and technical nominations going to each of them.

As is often the case it is the shows that miss out that often attract the biggest attention on days like today with critics and social media sites seemingly uniting today in their surprise and disgust at the lack of recognition for both The Good Wife and Orphan Black. Benedict Cumberbatch To Play Shakespeare’s Richard III on BBC – What’s Hot and What’s Trending 6 April 2014

Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing

Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing

Benedict Cumberbatch To Play Shakespeare’s Richard III on BBC –  despite having one of the busiest schedules of any British actor Benedict Cumberbatch is making space to play one of Shakespeare’s most difficult and iconic roles.

Just days after his Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman was announced as playing exactly the same role in a Trafalgar Studios production of the play in the West End in July this year, Benedict has been named as the title role in the BBC2 production of the play. The production will be part of the BBC’s 2nd series of History Plays and the production is to be directed by Dominic Cooke who has a wealth of experience with Shakespearean productions and who previously directed comedian Lenny Henry in the Royal National Theatre’s 2011 production of The Comedy of Errors.

No dates have been given yet for either the filming or the broadcast of the new BBC production but as we all know Benedict is incredibly busy at the moment and we would not be surprised if the rest of the cast have to fit around what few gaps there are in his diary, Let’s not forget that both he and Martin Freeman have to find plenty of time to film the next few episodes of Sherlock in time for Christmas this year. NTAs 2014, The Winners and Who Was Hot and Who Was Not On The Red Carpet – What’s Hot and What’s Trending 23 January 2014

Strictly's Abbey Clancy

NTAs 2014, The Winners and Who Was Hot and Who Was Not On The Red Carpet – apart from last night’s wardrobe malfunction from Kelly Brook there were a lot of things going on at the National Television Awards.

The least surprising part of the night came with Ant and Dec winning the Best Entertainment Presenter prize for the 13th year running but even they were shocked when they also picked up an NTA Landmark Award which also saw them receive a letter from the heir to the throne, Prince Charles.

As was only right and proper the new award of Best TV Detective went to Benedict Cumberbatch for his brilliant portrayal of the legendary detective in BBC’s Sherlock. With the NTAs being decided purely by public votes you can be sure that his fan army of Cumberbitches was out voting in force to make sure that he won.

Another topical winner was Coronation Street’s Julie Hesmondhalgh who won the Best Serial Drama Performance for her portrayal of Hayley Cropper. The character has just been involved in a moving and highly controversial story line that saw her take her own life after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. Just a couple of days ago radio dj Nicky Campbell ended up in tears live on air when a caller was discussing the ‘right to die’ debate on his programme phone-in.

It was also a good evening for Doctor Who fans as the show not only took home the award for Best Drama but also saw Matt Smith, the departing Doctor, win the Best Drama Performance award.

Our favourite talent show Strictly Come Dancing took home the Best Talent Show award beating off competition from X Factor and The Voice to crown off a very successful year for the show.

As far as the winner sand losers on the red carpet go it was another win for Strictly as the current champion Abbey Clancy won most people’s award for best dressed on the red carpet. She is still clearly benefiting from her dancing workouts and looked stunning in a long red dress. Fellow Strictly competitor Susanna Reid had a more mixed reaction to her white dress that some said made her look a little like a bridesmaid at a wedding. Read the rest of this entry »

Kelly Brook Wardrobe Malfunction at NTAs – What’s Hot and What’s Trending 22 January 2014

Kelly Brook stiff nipples showing through dress at NTAs 2014Kelly Brook Wardrobe Malfunction at NTAs – the model and Celebrity Juice star revealed a lot more than she intended as she turned up for tonight’s National Television Awards in a dress that quickly turned see-through under the camera lights.

The 34-year old wore a black dress that had a low plunging neckline to show off her curves as well as a thigh-high split to show off her legs.

Unfortunately for Kelly the top half of the dress was obviously a little too flimsy for the UK January weather and  her nipples were clearly visible through the dress. Things got even more interesting for the assembled crowd and photographers when it got to time to take the red carpet photos as the top half of the dress turned almost invisible under the lights.

As you can see from these photos the red carpet photos are more like glamour shots for a calendar than the usual posh ball gown affair although we are sure Kelly will have won a few more fans after this evening!

The awards are being held at London’s O2 and are being hosted this year by Dermot O’Leary. There are several big battles to fought out tonight such as the annual battle of the soaps between Coronation Street, Eastenders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks. There is also a new category which is sure to attract a lot of attention as Sherlock, Broadchurch and Luther compete to see who has the best TV Detective.  Read the rest of this entry »

World’s Sexiest Movie Stars – What’s Hot and What’s Trending 02 October 2013

Emma Watson - sexy white top no bra - winner of sexiest movie star in the world - Empire 2013World’s Sexiest Movie Stars – the readers of film magazine Empire have decided on the sexiest movie stars in the world and the good news for UK film fans is that the winners of both sexiest man and sexiest woman are British.

As a hint to a former child star turned singer the awards prove that you don’t have to go to extremes to be thought of as sexy by the public. Emma Watson has more than moved on from her first movie role as Hermione in the Harry Potter movie series.

Emma was the only British actress to make the Top 10 of the sexiest female movie star list with the next highest placed British female actress being Keira Knightley in 17th position with Kate Beckinsale, Gemma Arterton and Emily Blunt following just after Keira.

Emma beat off some strong international competition for the award with Scarlett Johansson coming in 2nd place, followed by Jennifer Lawrence in 3rd place.

Just to prove that the Empire readers have not forgotten those sexy ladies from the classic movies if the past Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly both got into the Top 50 list. Read the rest of this entry »

Benedict Cumberbatch Filming New Series Of Sherlock – What’s Hot and What’s Trending 01 August 2013

Lars Mikkelsen as Charles Augustus Magnussen in SherlockBenedict Cumberbatch Filming New Series Of Sherlock – the brilliant detective will soon be back on our screens as Benedict Cumberbatch and the rest of the Sherlock cast are currently in Cardiff filming scenes for the next series.

As well as featuring Cumberbatch as Sherlock, Martin Freeman as Watson, Mark Gatiss as Mycroft Holmes and Una Stubbs as Mrs Hudson there will be at least one new villain in the new series. It was announced on Twitter that the new series will feature at least one episode starring Danish actor Lars Mikkelsen. Mikkelsen is the brother of Hannibal and Casino Royale star Mads Mikkelsen and is himself well-known for playing some unpleasant characters in The Killing and Borgen.

It looks like Mikkelsen will be playing the role of Charles Augustus Magnusson. For fans of both the Sherlock series and the original Conan Doyle stories this almost certainly means a clever variation on the 1904 short story The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton. The original story shows us why the Milverton character is known as the “king of the blackmailers” as he extorts money from the great and the good by unearthing secrets they want to keep out of the public eye.

There has been much speculation over the shooting in Cardiff this week after Martin Freeman was spotted with a stunt double and smoke was seen coming from one of the buildings being filmed. It would not be the first time Freeman’s character has been in danger during a Sherlock adventure as he has suffered many troubles in the first few episodes including having a number of explosive devices strapped to him.

There are to be 3 2-hour shows in the next series and the titles of the shows are: The Empty Hearse, The Sign Of Three and His Last Vow.

Star Trek Into The Darkness Movie Premiere – What’s Hot and What’s Trending 03 May 2013

Alice Eve - looking sexy in low cut black dress revealing cleavageStar Trek Into The Darkness Movie Premiere – the latest outing for the Star Trek sci-fi franchise had its premiere at London’s Empire Cinema yesterday evening.

The cast was out in force (resists ‘may be with you’ remark!) and there were plenty of great outfits on view as well as a near wardrobe malfunction.

By all accounts the stand out female outfits for the night came from actress Alice Eve who stars as Dr Carol Marcus. She looked stunning as she wore a figure hugging grey suede look dress with a black belt to the actual movie premiere and an even better looking black dress to the after movie party at Aqua.

Although there is not believed to be romance in the air just yet it is more than likely that Alice will have a good long future in the Star Trek movies as it is a character with the same name who eventually gave birth to Captain Kirk’s children in the original 60’s television series.

If you have not heard much of Alice before then you can tell just from her parents that she is not only going to be super attractive but also a talented actress. Her father is Trevor Eve, forever Eddie Shoestring for those of the right age in the 70’s or perhaps you might remember him from his role as Det Supt Peter Boyd in the BBC drama Waking the Dead. He is also remembered for his part in the long-running tv ad for Nescafe Gold Blend (that’s Taster’s Choice if you are in the US) where he starred opposite his real-life wife the very attractive Sharon Maugham.

Although both of Alice’s outfits went down well with both the crowd and the assembled press fellow cast member Zoe Saldana, who plays Lt Uhura in the movie, was a little more troubled as she narrowly avoided a wardrobe malfunction in her white skirt which started to blow up in the wind threatening to reveal her underwear. It was only the intervention of Alice, Benedict Cumberbatch (John Harrison) and Zachary Quinto (Spock) that saved her blushes.

The movie has received some really good reviews although we guess the hardcore Trekkies will see it regardless of what is said by the movie critics. Star Trek Into The Darkness will go on general release on 09 May in the Uk and on 17 May in the US. It would be a fair bet that the movie will do well at the box office as so far the Star Trek movie franchise is estimated to have taken in excess of $1 billion in the US alone.

Is Doctor Who Too Sexy? – What’s Hot and What’s Trending 08 April 2013

Doctor Who kissing Clara - Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman

Matt Smith kissing Jenna-Louise Coleman

Is Doctor Who Too Sexy? – the director of the first series of Doctor Who has said he feels the show has now become too sexual.

Waris Hussein directed An Unearthly Child back in 1963 with William Hartnell playing the part of the Doctor and the parts of his then three companions were played by Carole Ann Ford, Jacqueline Hill and William Russell. The four episodes of the first series were soon overshadowed by the next series which featured The Daleks.

Indian-born director Hussein says that he believes Doctor Who now has an element of sexuality in its programmes and said in an interview with the BBC ‘Why bring in this element when in fact you needn’t have it there?’

He went on to say how surprised he was that with the recent rebirth of The Doctor there had been a scene showing the Doctor “snogging” his new companion Clara Oswald, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman. Read the rest of this entry »
