Jessica Chastain To Play Marilyn Monroe – according to The Wrap Jessica Chastain is to play iconic Hollywood sex symbol Marilyn Monroe in a new movie.
Chastain has certainly proved she can act after her award-winning performance in Zero Dark Thirty. Add to this the fact that she is happy to go nude on-screen as seen in her performance as Maggie Beauford in 2012 movie Lawless and she would seem to have all the requirements for the role. Except of course that as a redhead she will be taking on the part of the woman who is probably the most famous blonde of all-time.
It would not be Jessica’s first time taking on the role of a blonde woman as she has previously played blonde character Celia Foote in The Help, a role which won her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Jessica is said to be close to signing up for the role as Marilyn in the new movie Blonde which is based on the book of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates. There has been talk of an adaptation for some years now and originally Naomi Watts was being lined up to play the part of Marilyn but that was back in 2010.
The original book ran to almost 1k pages and was very well received by both critics and the general public. It goes into great depth about the problems Marilyn encountered and covers many of her relationships including her difficult early years with her mother. The Sunday Times said of Blonde “nobody has ever caught Marilyn more brilliantly in words than Oates”.
The new movie is to be produced by Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B and he is believed to have been instrumental in convincing Jessica to take on the role of Monroe.
Andrew Dominick is likely to direct Blonde and he has said of the new project that it is a “really sprawling, emotional nightmare fairy-tale type movie … about an abandoned orphan who gets lost in the woods”.
It is not the first time that Blonde has been taken to the screen as back in 2001 there was a 2001 tv movie adaptation of the Oates novel with Aussie actress Poppy Montgomery (Without A Trace and Unforgettable) taking on the role of Marilyn. This tv movie also starred Ann-Margret as Delia Monroe, Marilyn’s maternal grandmother. If it had been possible to go back a few years in time we think that Ann-Margret would have made a superb Marilyn. Whoever remembers her rolling around in molten chocolate in The Who’s 1975 rock musical Tommy will now that not only had she got the acting chops for the part she also had the body.
Filming on Blonde is expected to begin in August this year and is likely to hit cinemas some time next year.
