ESPY Awards 2013, Winners and Red Carpet Photos – What’s Hot and What’s Trending 18 July 2013

Michael Phelps and hot girlfriend Win McMurryESPY Awards 2013, Winners and Red Carpet Photos – this year’s ESPY award ceremony brought the usual mix of sports stars and celebrities from the world of television and movies.

The event was hosted by Mad Men star Jon Hamm and came from the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live. Previous hosts for the sports award show have included Samuel L Jackson, Matthew Perry, Justin Timberlake and Seth Meyers. The title of ESPY Awards is actually an abbreviation, the full title of the awards being the Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards.

There were a number of red carpet highlights, including models and movie stars as well as the expected sports stars from track and field, tennis, swimming and gymnastics to name but a few.

As might be expected at the awards there was plenty of room for some crossover guests with one of the most popular on the night being model and tv presenter Katherine Webb who was seen on the celebrity diving show Splash! Katherine’s nautically themed outfit seemed to divide opinion on the night with some finding the revealing design just to their taste whilst others found it a less attractive design.

Also causing a stir on the ESPYs red carpet were actress Olivia Wilde and her boyfriend Jason Sudeikis. Olivia wore a little black crop top which she matched with a light and dark red check pencil skirt. The couple has recently been in the news for talking about their very active sex life which Jason says is responsible for his recent dramatic weight loss. Sound better than eating rice cakes doesn’t it! Read the rest of this entry »

Celebrity Great British Bake Off – What’s Hot and What’s Trending 18 January 2013

Paul Hollywood and Mary BerryCelebrity Version Of Great British Bake Off – the main series of Great British Bake Off was probably one of the most surprising tv successes of last year here in the UK.

The main series is presented by Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc and also features professional baker Paul Hollywood and the well-known cookery writer Mary Berry who both judge and comment on the competitor’s dishes. Both Mary and Paul have proved very popular with the public with Paul winning many female fans with his mean and moody approach and his silver fox good looks whilst Mary has surprised viewers with her fashionable choices of outfit. In fact a £30 floral bomber jacket that 77-year old Mary wore early on in the latest series proved to be such a hit that Zara sold out in hours and copies of the jacket were soon selling on eBay for up to £200.

In the new Celebrity Great British Bake Off, which is to be called the Great Comic Relief Bake Off, all the action will take place over just 4 programmes starting this Monday (21 January). Each programme will feature 4 different celebrities who will each have to produce a signature bake, a technical bake and a showstopper bake. The winner of each show will then be given the title of Comic Relief Star Baker.

Claudia Winkleman in sexy low cut dressSeveral of the celebrities have already admitted to be being slightly obsessed by baking with Film 2013 and Strictly Come Dancing presenter the very cute Claudia Winkleman saying “I am actually obsessed with baking. I often cover the kitchen in flour and I have three whisks. I have only ever made two things – a Victoria sponge and chocolate cookies.

“It turns out the Bake Off is about other things too. I had the most brilliant time and have baked more since taking part. But I refuse to try pastry, I can’t even discuss it.”

Amongst the other celebrities taking part in the show are comics Jo Brand, Bob Mortimer, Ed Byrne and Stephen K Amos, Paralympian Ellie Simmonds, Olympian Helen Glover, diminutive actor Warwick Davis as well as presenters Julia Bradbury, Martha Kearney and Kirsty Wark.

We can look forward to seeing the celebrities cooking up their own versions of chocolate cake, shortbread, Bakewell tart, scones and lemon meringue pie.

As the series is linked in with fundraising for the Comic Relief charity there is also an accompanying Great Comic Relief Bake Off book which can be purchased from Sainsburys and an Emma Bridgewater designed kitchen apron that will be available from TK Maxx and Homesense stores.

Splash! Tom Daley’s New Celebrity Diving Show – What’s Hot and What’s Trending 02 January 2013

Diver Tom Daley in wet shirt showing chest and absNames Announced For Splash! Tom Daley’s New Celebrity Diving Show – the names of the 15 competitors have been announced for the new celebrity diving show.

The new show is to be hosted by Gabby Logan and Strictly host Tess Daly’s husband Vernon Kay. All of those taking part will receive expert help from British Olympic diving hero Tom Daley. Tom has recently found himself  near the top of the calendar sales charts with photos of him in wet swimming trunks proving very popular with the ladies.

The 15 competitors will be spread amongst the 3 opening programmes with the first 5 taking part being presenter Jenni Falconer, comedienne Helen Lederer, actor Jake Canuso, comic Omid Djalili and Sugababe Jade Ewen.

The show is based on a successful Dutch tv show called Sterren Springen Op Zaterdag (Stars Jumping On Saturday) which first aired in August last year. As well as the new UK show the format has also been sold to US network ABC where their version will be called Splash Celebrity.

The show certainly carries plenty of risk for the competitors as during the first season of the Dutch show one competitor ruptured an eardrum and another broke her nose.

The other competitors competing in Splash include Joey Essex, Linda Barker, Jennifer Metcalfe, Charlotte Jackson and model Caprice. It had been rumoured that Jordan’s former boyfriend Leandro Penna was to take part in the show but he was not named in the final line-up.

Some of those taking part have been talking about their fears with Sugababe Jade revealing that she has only just learnt to swim having been scared of water when she was growing up.

“I was never taught to swim, I went to a performing arts school so we didn’t have PE. As an adult, I’d blag it and sit by the pool and watch people swim and try to copy.

“My mum always told me, ‘Don’t go in the sea or you’ll drown.’ I’ve grown up thinking I’ll drown if I go in the water. I can’t get it out of my head.”

Caprice in pool with wet shirt showing nipplesAnother competitor who has been voicing her fears is model Caprice Bourret who thinks that her large breasts will prove to be a problem when she starts diving. She told a programme source that she was concerned that hitting the water with such large breasts would be painful so she has received assurances that she will be taught techniques to deal with the problem.

However the competitor who will have to overcome the greatest fear is undoubtedly Benidorm star Canuso who nearly died in 2004 when he got caught up in the tsunami while he was on holiday in Thailand. Jake said that as the pool they have to dive into is so deep he feels can’t get to the surface quickly enough. He said that this comes from his experience in the tsunami and he knows that he does have enough time and air to get to the surface.

Tom Daley is hoping that Splash! marks the start of a new career in the media although he probably has plenty of years of competitive diving left as he is still only 18-years old.

Once competitors have made their dives on the show they will be awarded marks from a panel of 4 judges that includes Tom Daley. After this the phone lines are opened for viewers to vote for their favourites. Then at the end of the show the top scoring diver goes through to the semi-final stage with the next two highest scoring divers entering a Splash! Off which is scored by the judging panel to decide the next person proceeding through to the semi-finals.

Splash! starts this Saturday (5th January) on ITV1 at 7.15.

Louis Smith and Flavia Cacace Win Strictly Come Dancing Title – What’s Hot and What’s Trending 22 December 2012

Topless Louis Smith lifts up Flavia Cacace in Strictly Final showdanceLouis Smith Wins Strictly Come Dancing 2012 – the 23-year old Olympian lifted this year’s glitterball trophy after a brilliant set of performances this evening.

First finalist to be eliminated was Dani Harmer with her partner Vicente Simone. After improving week after week and being very consistent with her steps Dani seemed to be very nervous in tonight’s final and she scored lowest of all 4 finalists with the judges.

However it was the public vote that decided who would be eliminated first and it appears that the Great British public agreed with the judges for once and it was Tracey Beaker actress Dani who had to leave the final.

Girls Aloud star Kimberley Walsh does the splits on Strictly Come Dancing FinalDuring the first half of the final all of the competitors got the chance to perform a special show dance. Denise Van Outen and her partner James Jordan performed their showdance to Flashdnace by Irene Cara. Dani and Vincent performed their showdance to a much abbreviated version of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody with Kimberly Walsh and Pasha Kovalev performed their dance to Beyonce’s Crazy In Love with Kimberly looking hotter than she had throughout the entire competition.

It was probably Louis Smith and Flavia Cacace’s showdance to Take That’s Rule The World that actually won them this year’s Strictly title. The dance was unlike any showdance seen before on the programme and made the most of Louis’s flexibility and strength. He has had problems with his back and had mostly left off from lifts to ensure he didn’t damage his back. Well the strategy certainly worked as the couple wowed the crowd and television audience with a spectacular showdance and pulled off one of the most incredible moves ever seen on the show with Louis lifting Flavia up before slowly turning her upside down and holding her perfectly still.

Louis Smith and Flavia Cacae lift the Strictly Come Dancing glitterball trophy for 2012Head judge Len Goodman said of Louis and Flavia’s showdance: ‘When you started i thought it will be all gymnastics and flip flops. That lift… if this show goes on for another 20 years I don’t think will see another showdance as magical as that.’

The dance even got BBC Olympic’s commentator Clare Balding onto Twitter: @clarebalding Louis’ showdance was absolutely beautiful. Never seen a Strictly dance like it. Incredible

In the second half of the final the remaining three couples were able to choose their favourite dance of the series to dance again for the judges and the public. Denise and James went first reprising their Charleston to Walk Like An Egyptian and scored a maximum 40 points from the judges.

Next up were Kimberley and Pasha who chose to dance their tango to Prince’s When Doves Cry and they also pulled out a maximum score from the judges.

Finally Louis and Flavia danced their Charleston to Dr Wanna Do by Cara Emerald. This was not one of their highest scoring dances but was credited as being the moment when Louis first managed to inject some emotion into his performance so was seen by the couple as their turning point in this year’s Strictly. Although it was a great performance it was not enough to get Craig to pull out his 10 yet again so they finished with a score of 39 points.

Louis and Flavia - sexy danceAfter all the public votes were counted it is revealed that Louis Smith is this year’s champion together with his professional dance partner Flavia Cacace. Louis looks delighted to win but it is 33-year old Flavia who looks the most amazed of the pair as it is the first time she has lifted the glitterball trophy despite being a Strictly regular since the 4th series in 2006.

Louis has a joke with Tess Daly after finding out he has won the Strictly title saying ‘I can finally say I won something in the year 2012.’ This is of course a reference to him missing out on an Olympic Gold medal in the pommel horse by the very narrowest of margins.

You will not have to wait long for another Strictly fix as there is a pre-recorded Christmas special of the show on BBC1 at 6.15 on Christmas Day.

Top Fashion Cities, Funniest Movies of All Time

Top Fashion Capitals in the World – the annual poll of the world’s most fashionable cities has been won by London for the 2nd year running.

The survey of the world’s top fashion capitals is run by Global Language Monitor (GLM) and is now in its 9th year. Although London won the title in 2011 as well as this year it is New York which has so far got the biggest number of Number 1 placings.

The survey now takes in data from 5 top fashion capitals in 5 different continents. Bekka Payack, the New York-based Fashion Director of GLM says of London’s 2012 victory: “London’s two-year run has been has been propelled by two rather extraordinary circumstances:  the emergence of the former Kate Middleton as a top fashion icon and the recent completion of what have been hailed as an extremely successful Summer Olympics.”

“For high fashion Paris is number one but it not the media machine these other places are. Barcelona has made a really strong attempt to move forward and those efforts are paying off.”

One surprise in the rankings is Milan’s drop from 4th place in 2011 to 8th place this year, in fact Milan was not even top fashion city in Italy with Rome beating it by 2 places.

GLM compile the list using data from internet sites, blogs, Twitter and the top 250k print and electronic news media.

Funniest Films of All Time – Airplane has topped a list of the funniest movies of all time.

In a survey run by movie subscription and streaming service Lovefilm, the 1980 US disaster movie was shown to generate the most laughs per minute (lpm) amongst movie audiences.

Interestingly based on a vote from the Lovefilm members Life Of Brian was seen to be their favourite comedy although Airplane beat it for laughs.

The 2 films have often appeared in lists of the funniest films ever and in a Guardian poll from 2007 Life of Brian beat Airplane to the top spot.

Airplane has a number of classic movie comedy lines with the most famous probably being: “Surely you can’t be serious?’ “I am serious… and don’t call me Shirley.”

The movie was Leslie Nielsen’s big break into comedy as before 1980 he was mostly known for dramatic and romantic roles having appeared in Forbidden Planet and The Opposite Sex both released in 1956. He certainly seems to be a good bet for a laugh if you are renting a movie as he also in the Number 3 film on the list Naked Gun: Form The Files of Police Squad. Incidentally anybody looking for a really funny tv series could do a lot worse than teat themselves to a copy of the original Police Squad television series from 1982 which was unbelievably cancelled by ABC after just 6 episodes. Many of the gags in the Naked Gun movies originated in the Police Squad tv series including the brilliant opening and closing credits.

The producers of Airplane were certainly laughing all the way to the bank as it made $83m at the box-office when it was released in 1980 and only cost $3.5m to make. You can also be sure it has made a small fortune in video and dvd sales to add to its box-office takings.

Here is the list of the Top Funniest Movies of All Time with their laugh per minute scores:

1. ‘Airplane!’ – 3 Laughs A Minute

2. ‘The Hangover’ – 2.4 Laughs A Minute

3. ‘The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!’ – 2.3 Laughs A Minute

4. ‘Superbad’ – 1.9 Laughs A Minute

5. ‘Borat’ – 1.7 Laughs A Minute

6. ‘Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy’ – 1.6 Laughs A Minute

7. ‘American Pie’ – 1.5 Laughs A Minute

8. ‘Bridesmaids’ – 1.4 Laughs A Minute

9. ‘Shaun of the Dead’ – 1.3 Laughs A Minute

10. ‘Life of Brian’ – 1.2 Laughs A Minute

GQ Men of the Year Awards

GQ Men Of The Year Awards – Team GB’s Olympic heroes stole the show at this year’s GQ Men of the Year Awards.

There were a host of Team GB stars from both the Olympics and the Paralympics at the award ceremony which was held this year at the Royal Opera House in London.

The evening was jointly hosted by comedians Jimmy Carr and David Walliams. Despite being billed as an awards event for men it was the women who got a lot of the attention, some for good fashion sense and others for their less stylish (and less tasteful) outfits.

One of the fashion winners on the night was singer Jessie J who wore a very stylish long black jacket style outfit which had a low plunging front and a very high split in the skirt. The outfit was a definite statement of style after she publicly parted with her former stylist who was responsible for her earlier somewhat bizarre choices of outfit which have been criticised by the singer for making her look like “a cartoon character.”

A less well received outfit was Nancy Dell’Ollio’s choice of a transparent black outfit which showed a little too much of her 51-year old breasts for most tastes. Although she was partly covered from the front by some strange silver and gold straps at least one of her nipples clearly made a bid for freedom!

One of the least surprising awards of the night went to the Team GB Olympians who won the Team of the Year Award. There were a number of our Olympic and Paralympic heroes on show including Bradley Wiggins, Sir Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton, Mo Farah, Zoe Newson and Jody Cundy.

As well as going up for the team award Bradley Wiggins also took the Lifetime Achievement Award. He was dressed in a mod-style pale grey checked suit to receive the award which was presented to him by his hero Liam Gallagher.

Another man who credited his win to the Team BG Olympic spirit was London Mayor Boris Johnson who was given his award for Politician of the Year by Kelly Brook. Johnson’s comments on receiving the award were:
“I don’t deserve it, but on the principle that I would almost certainly have been blamed if things had gone wrong, I’ll accept it.”

The full list of winners from the GQ Men of the Year Awards is:

  • Team – Team GB Olympians
  • Lifetime Achievement – Bradley Wiggins
