Princess Diana,10 Of Her Most Famous Dresses To Be Sold – What’s Hot and What’s Trending 16 March 2013

Princess Diana, 10 Of Her Most Famous Dresses To Be Sold – this Tuesday 10 of the late Princess Diana’s most famous dresses are to go under the hammer.

The dresses are being sold by specialist fashion auctioneer Kerry Taylor Auctions, who in 2010 auctioned the black taffeta dress that DIana wore for her first official engagement with her then fiance the Prince of Wales. That particular dress was sold in the end for £192k and ended up in the Museo de la Moda fashion museum in Santiago, Chile.

The auction this time includes 6 Catherine Walker dresses, as well as gowns by Victor Edelstein and Bruce Oldfield. All 10 dresses were originally sold on the Princess’s instructions in a New York charity auction in June 1997, just 2 months before she died following a car crash in the Pont Del’Alma tunnel in Paris. In fact Diana auctioned a total of 79 different dresses at this time through auctioneers Christies, with many of them going into the hands of private collectors as well as museums.

The 10 dresses for sale on Tuesday were originally bought by Florida businesswoman Maureen Rorech Dunkel as an investment and they spent some years travelling the world on exhibition. Unfortunately she now has to sell her collection as she has run into financial difficulties.

Amongst the collection is the midnight blue, off-the-shoulder Victor Edelstein dress that Diana wore to a state dinner at the White House in 1985. This is what she was wearing when she danced with John Travolta to a medley of songs from his movies. Not surprisingly pictures of the pair dancing made their way all around the world. This dress alone has a guide price of £300k although some think it could make much more than this. Read the rest of this entry »

Scarlett Johansson in Psycho, Titanic

Scarlett Johansson in Psycho movie – the actress has landed the part of Janet Leigh in a new movie about the making of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 horror classic.

The new movie is to be called “Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho” and will also star Helen Mirren as Alma, Hitchcock’s wife. Scarlett will be playing Janet Leigh for the off-screen sections of the movie and also be shown as her character Marion Crane.

As Marion, Janet Leigh took part in what was probably the most famous scene from any Hitchcock film and possibly any film of all time. The infamous shower scene will be recreated with Scarlett in the new movie and in the original film was responsible for around 6 days of filming time even though it lasted just 3 minutes on-screen.

We are wondering if Scarlett was practising the shower scene last September when she took the naked photos of herself in her bathroom, which subsequently appeared online?

The new movie is to be directed by Sacha Gervasi who made “Anvil! The Story of Anvil”, a rockumentary about the Canadian band Anvil. Although there is no footage available of the new movie there is already talk comparing it to “My Week With Marilyn.” Variety magazine has said that it will be concentrating on an untold story in Hitchcock’s life much in the same way as we saw behind the facade in “My Week With Marilyn.” Scarlett will certainly be hoping that the role of Janet Leigh brings her the same success as Michele William’s had playing the part of Marilyn Monroe, which brought her a number of honours including an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

As well as Johansson and Mirren the movie will also star Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock and James D’Arcy as Anthony Perkins, who played the part of Norman Bates the psycho motel owner of the title.

If you can’t wait for the new movie to see Scarlett (no release date as yet but probably some time in 2013), then you can catch up with her in her latest picture “We Bought A Zoo” which is on release in the UK from 16 March.

New Titanic television series – ITV is to show a 4 part mini-series telling the stories of the people behind the Titanic disater.

The series has been written by Julian Fellowes, the writer behind the hugely successful Downton Abbey. He says that he has written a much more realistic version of the final hours of the ship than that depicted in the 1996 film which starred Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. He described James Cameron’s film as just a “love story set against the sinking of the Titanic.”

The new series will star Peep Show’s Sophie Winkleman as US silent film star Dorothy Gibson. She will bring a touch of the aristocracy to the series as she is married to Lord Frederick Windsor and can officially be called Lady Frederick Windsor. She is also half-sister of Claudia Winkleman, of Strictly and Film 2012 fame.

It is a big year for Titanic followers as it marks the 100th anniversary of the ship sinking in the early hours of 15 April 1912. The ship hit an iceberg off the coast of Newfoundland just before midnight on 14 April 1912 and the disaster claimed the lives of 1514 people of the total 2224 aboard. The ship was famously on its maiden voyage when it sank and had been described prior to the disaster as unsinkable.

Fellowes says that he has resisted placing any of the Downton Abbey characters into the new series. Followers of the show will remember that the very first episode of Downton began with the news of the sinking of the Titanic with the heir to Downton and his son among the lives lost.

The series will be shown on ITV later this month and also stars Timothy West and Celia Imrie.

Celebrity Hair of the Year, Captain Scott – What’s Hot and What’s Trending 28 December 2011

Celebrity Hair of the Year – newly crowned Strictly champ Harry Judd has won the title of best celebrity hair of the year.

He was closely followed in the poll by Prince Harry in 2nd place and Peter Andre in 3rd place with last year’s winner of the title, Harry Styles of One Direction, coming in a distant 8th.

As well as the title of best celebrity hair there was also a category for worst celebrity hair and this was won (if that is the right word!) by disgraced X Factor contestant Frankie Cocozza. Also appearing on the worst hair list were Wayne Rooney and another hair transplant recipient Louis Walsh. Joining them are Simon Cowell, Robbie Savage, Prime Minister David Cameron and the Duke of Cambridge. The second worst celebrity hair went to pop duo Jedward.

The results come from a survey of 3000 people commissioned by hair-care company Brylcreem to tie in with Brylcreem National Men’s Hair Week. A Brylcreem spokesman said: “It’s another eclectic and mixed bunch of celebrities in this year’s poll, showing the importance of hair in the popularity and style stakes.”

Today’s news comes just after Cheryl Cole was voted top in a survey to find Britain’s top hair icon of 2011. The survey by hair loss treatment company MediGro had 5000 women vote for their favourite celebrity hair icon.

Coming just after Cheryl were Rihanna, Beyonce, Kate Winslet and the Duchess of Cambridge. As well as voting for a celebrity hair icon the women were surveyed about their own hair styling and it was found that a quarter of the nation have dyed their hair lighter this year, while 21 per cent have opted for a darker style. One third of the UK’s women regularly use straighteners and 26 per cent now use dry shampoo to maintain their look. The survey also found that women spend as much as 45 minutes styling their hair daily, equating to 273 hours a year.

Centenary of Captain Scott’s Expedition – one hundred years ago Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his team were on their fateful last expedition to the South Pole.

Their journey is to be celebrated in an exhibition at the National History Museum which is due to open on 20th January next year which is 3 days after the centenary of the team reaching their target. For the first time in 100 years items such as clothes, sledges and pickaxes used by the expedition team will be reunited with the scientific specimens they and their colleagues collected on the Terra Nova Expedition.

The NHM exhibition is to concentrate on the scientific side of Captain Scott’s team. They went to the South Pole to study the weather conditions, zoology and also the new scientific discipline of glaciology. The exhibition will also show how the team ate during their time in the freezing conditions. “They had china and metal forks and it was basically what you would expect on a ship,” says Elin Simonsson of the NHM. “They were eating quite well. Every day the team’s cook Clissold would cook them a three-course meal and often they had penguin or seal meat and they would make different stews.” The base camp’s stores were filled with tons of jams, cheeses and tinned vegetables. “They also had alcohol with them so they could have a glass of wine or champagne every now and then,” says Simonsson.

The trip did of course have a tragic end as Scott and his team failed in their quest to become the first expedition to reach the South Pole.

Captain Scott wrote his last diary entry on 29 March 1912, on his way back from the South Pole after the terrible realisation that the rival team led by Roald Amundsen had reached the pole first. At that stage, his team was only 20km from a depot that contained the food and fuel they so desperately needed to survive. When Scott’s party did not return to base camp by the time the Antarctic winter had set in, the remainder of the Terra Nova expedition knew that they must have perished.

“When spring returned, they went out to look for them and in November 1912 found them alongside their letters and diaries, and they felt the best thing to do would be to leave them there in the Antarctic wilderness,” said Simonsson. “And they’re still there today, in the ice, slowly floating towards the sea.”

There are currently 2 teams of British Army officers recreating the famous race to the South Pole. Warrant Officer Mark Landridge is leading a team that is following the route Captain Scott took while another team, led by Lieutenant Colonel Henry Worsley, is taking the same path as the Norwegian explorer in the race, which is raising money for the Royal British Legion.

The photo above shows Herbert Ponting, Scott’s official photographer from the expedition, posing with his photographic equipment on a dog-cart being pulled by his 2 dogs Miss Johnson and Lassie. The photo was taken 100 years ago on Christmas Eve.

Zumba Fitness, Stonehenge – What’s Hot and What’s Trending 02 December 2011

Zumba fitness – a big surprise to many people is the fact that the biggest selling title of the year on the Nintendo Wii is not a shoot-em-up or a sports game but Zumba Fitness from 505 Games.

The Zumba Fitness title is used in conjunction with the Wii Balance Board and is also available on the PlayStation 3 for use with the PlayStation Move and the Xbox 360 for use with its Kinetic controller. The Zumba Fitness titles are all based on the Latin inspired Zumba dance fitness program which was developed by the Colombian dancer and choreographer Alberto “Beto” Perez.

You can tell that Zumba is an extremely active dance when you hear that it incorporates elements from salsa, samba, mambo, merengue, hip-hop, martial arts and Bollywood. Add into this squats, lunges and some belly dancing and you begin to get the idea what zumba is all about.

With the original Zumba Fitness title shifting around 1m units it was no great surprise when it was announced that there was a second title due to be released last month. The official announcement of the sequel was made during an advertising break in the X Factor.

Zumba Fitness 2 is expected to sell extremely well in the run up to Christmas and very unusually for a title for games systems its main target audience is women. With fitness and weight reduction on everyone’s mind after the festive season it is expected to take the good run of sales through to the post-Christmas period as well.

On the Wii platform the original Zumba Fitness will cost you around £20 with Zumba Fitness 2 setting you back about £25. As well as letting you get fit at home on your own you can also invite some friends round to get involved with you. The whole zumba craze has been a very social thing.

The health benefits of zumba are appreciated by many fitness experts and one of the NHS Primary Care Trusts in the North East has even decided to run zumba classes to keep its staff fit and well.

Stonehenge – the ancient monument finds itself in the hot and trending charts after it was suggested that it be lit at night.

The discussion on a change at the site began after Lady Mimi Pakenham, of Warminster, in Wiltshire, raised the idea in The Times. She said:  “The magic of Stonehenge could be shared every evening with all who pass, many of whom can’t afford a ticket, just as it was a magical place thousands of years ago, sometimes with the Moon and clouds shining as well. With subtle lighting sunk well out of view and endless possibilities of solar energy, the monumental power of ancient man’s achievement in another age would inspire all who pass by. Perhaps in depressing times a cocktail of cost-free magic is the very least we can expect from the guardians of the national heritage.”

For all her enthusiasm and well-chosen words it appears that not everyone agrees with Lady Mimi about illuminating the ancient site. One of the reasons for this is that the site is thought to have originally used the stones to link not just with the sun but also the moon and the night stars and many feel that lighting the monument would spoil the authenticity of the experience at Stonehenge. Those opposing the change include the unusual partners of scientists and Druids.

One further point against illuminating the site is the possibility of an increase in road accidents caused by people on the nearby road slowing down to look at Stonehenge. The site was in fact previously lit up in the late 70’s and early 80’s and this ceased due an increase in road accidents at that time.

Stonehenge is located in Wiltshire 8 miles north of Salisbury and just to the west of the town of Amesbury by the A303 road. The monument is believed to have been constructed sometime between 3000 and 2000 BC.

The 2 main mysteries associated with Stonehenge are how the huge stones got put into place so long ago and what was the site used for?  With regard to its function as well as being a burial ground the site is thought to have been used for worship and also healing.

Princess Diana Death Anniversary, Rosie Huntington-Whitely, Jack The Ripper Photo – What’s Hot and What’s Trending 31 August 2011

Princess Diana – it might seem an unlikely top trender but the reason that Diana is at the top of the heap today is that today is the anniversary of her death.

Diana, Princess of Wales, died on 31 August 1997, at the age of 36, after an accident in the Pont de l’Alma road tunnel in Paris.

She was without question the most photographed woman in the world during her time in the royal spotlight until her untimely death. She was known not only for her tremendous style and fashion sense but also for all of her work raising funds for charity.

The public continues to be fascinated by Diana and a recent poll has her placed as the Royal that most people would like to have a phone call with, given the choice of any Royals, living or dead. She was also 7th in the overall list, being the only female to appear.

Rosie Huntington-Whitely – English actress from the 2011 Transformers film, who is best known for her modelling work, especially that for the Victoria’s Secret lingerie company.

She has been announced as the new face of Marks & Spencer 2011 Autograph Collection. Her male counterpart is the Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, star of the Green Lantern. They shot the pictures for the new campaign at the St Pancras Grand in London.

As well as previous work for Victoria’s Secret Rosie has also undertaken work for Burberry. She talked of her new M&S role saying “I feel proud to be associated with a British high street favourite that holds fond memories for so many people.”

Jack The Ripper – we are going even further back in time for our next trender. It is also the first time we have a person on the list whose identity is unknown. It was today back in 1888 that Mary Ann Nichols, the Ripper’s first victim was found in London.

There have been many people put forward as the true Jack The Ripper and a new BBC program has given us a new name to add to the list, that of Carl Feigenbaum, a German merchant.

Although no photographs of Feigenbaum exist Trevor Marriott, a retired detective, has out together an e-fit from eyewitness descriptions. Feigenbaum was convicted of killing his landlady in New York and died in the electric chair in Sing Sing prison. More weight is given to the theory of Feigenbaum being Jack The Ripper as his lawyer, William Sanford Lawton,  believed him to be the killer.

The picture to the side here is the e-fit that was recreated from eyewitness statements and descriptions.
