39-year old Mel has plenty of experience to call on in her new role as a judge as in addition to acting as a guest judge on the show back in 2012 she has also been on the judging panel for The X Factor Australia, The Voice Kids Australia and is currently one of the judges on America’s Got Talent.
The full judges line-up was announced this morning and when the 11th series of X Factor starts later in the year Mel B will be joining Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole and Louis Walsh on the show.
Simon Cowell is clearly keen to bring something of an edge to this year’s panel as well as some glamour and he is said to have been impressed with Mel when she previously appeared on the show. As many judges have found out it is good to keep on the right side of Mr C. There have been many people wondering why Simon has kept Louis Walsh as part of the judging panel as he doesn’t seem to fit in with the sort of image he is trying to create and added to that there are many who believe that Cheryl Cole is not a fan and may have a problem working with him. At least with Louis returning there will be some continuity as it won’t be long before he says to a singer “you remind me of a young…”
Mel is likely to be a definite Marmite judge as we think it won’t be long before X Factor viewers either love her or hate her. We are guessing that most will come to love her blatantly honest style. Mel has now got plenty of fans on America’s Got Talent despite the fact that on her very first show in New Orleans last year she was booed by the audience for not liking a local brass band.
As well as sharing her strong opinions Mel has also been keen to show her fashion style on AGT as she and fellow judge Heidi Klum have often had a battle of the cleavage or legs on the show. We are sure this bodes well for the next X Factor series with both Cheryl and Mel on board and this will no doubt encourage Simon Cowell that ratings should improve from the last series.
Mel said of today’s news: “I’ve always thought honesty is the best policy when being a judge and that’s what I’m going to bring more of this year. Whether it’s spotting an incredible singer, giving someone a reality check or debating with Simon over who’s got it wrong.”
“Now I can’t wait to get started and find some amazing talent.”
For his part Simon Cowell said of Mel’s appointment on the show: “I thought she was fantastic as a guest judge a couple of years ago. She is feisty, opinionated and, I believe, will be a great mentor.”
The open auditions for Series 11 have already been held all around the country with the judge’s auditions due to start in Manchester next week on 16 June. Details of when the series will air on tv have yet to be released.
