Cannes amfAR Gala Brings Out The Glamour – this year’s Cannes amfAR Cinema Against AIDS was certainly the festival’s most glamorous affair so far.
The annual fundraiser is held to raise money in the search for a cure for AIDS and the event always has a strong turnout with Hollywood having several of its own having lost their lives to the disease. In the past Elizabeth Taylor was noted for her strong support for AIDS charities and indeed in the last few years of her life she devoted much of her time to raising funds.
This year’s amfAR has a tough job to beat the total raised at last year’s gala which came in at a whopping $25m.
If the number of celebrities turning out is a sign as to how much money is going to be raised then we forecast that the huge figure of last year may actually be in danger. One of the main ways that the evening raises funds is by way of a live auction held during the black tie event. With prizes such as a Virgin trip to space with Leonardo diCaprio and original works of art by artists including Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst then you can see it is no ordinary fundraising auction.
The evening also includes a fashion show organised by Carine Roitfeld, the former editor in chief of Vogue Paris, the world’s most influential fashion journal. All in all with everything going on is it any wonder that the gala is the week’s most sought after ticket.
As far as what everyone was wearing tonight then the news is that after previous years of the emphasis on shorter length gowns, long splits and see-through sections this year we are moving towards cut out sections as the must have fashion feature. Amongst those sporting a cut-out style outfit tonight were Lara Stone, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Irina Shayk, Michelle Rodriguez, Allesandra Ambrosio, Heidi Klum and Sharon Stone.
The Cannes Festival has always been a place for the glamorous older woman to show she still has what it takes and although Sophia Loren is still looking great at 79-years old, tonight it was Sharon Stone’s turn to impress as she arrived in a very revealing red dress (with cut-out sections of course) and showed that even at 56-years old she is still happy to show her aversion to wearing underwear. All those years ago in Basic Instinct it was no knickers that caused a stir and tonight it was her wearing no bra that had much the same reaction.
Other outfits that had the wow factor if not the on-trend cut-out factor included Kylie Minogue’s long pale coloured silk gown which featured a plunging neckline and Nicole Scherzinger’s very fitted, very low-cut black gown.
The gala is being held at the very glamorous Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Cap d’Antibes. The guests will have just finished spending some of their millions at tonight’s live auction and are moving on to relax a little at the after party. As you would expect from such an event it is no ordinary party with live performances expected from Robin Thicke and Lana del Ray.
Here are a few more of tonight’s fashion hits.
