Susanna Reid Talks About Her New ITV Job – the BBC’s Breakfast Golden Girl has broken her silence for the first time since it was confirmed she will be leaving to join ITV to front a new breakfast programme.
It seems that the lure of her own show together with an increase in salary from £250k to £1m plus a greatly reduced commute time was all just to good an offer to turn down. The BBC have said that they were unable to match the terms offered by ITV although it must still be bitterly disappointing for them to lose their main morning draw to the opposition.
Ever since she was such a popular choice on the last series of Strictly it was clear that Susanna would not be content with just going back to her old routine once the show was over. She was a popular choice with other women who liked how she managed to combine a home life and children with a successful career and she was even more popular with the male audience who liked her choice of cleavage-revealing outfits and also her regular on air wardrobe malfunctions that brightened up their breakfast time.
It has since been revealed that Susanna was a less popular cast member of Strictly than was first thought as she has been described as being seduced by all of the attention and glamour of the show and ended up distancing herself more and more from the other celebrities on the show. Fiona Fullerton said Susanna lacked charm and even described her as approaching the competition ‘with a PR campaign driven with military precision.’
Another casualty of Susanna’s time on Strictly is her 15 year relationship with Dominic Cotton, the father of her 3 young sons. A source close to the charity CEO claimed that he was tired of being stood up by Susanna when she always found time for her work commitments and her friends. Susanna had previously described Cotton as being a better parent than her.
The news of their separation came about as a result of journalists finding Cotton’s profile on internet dating site Match.com which must have been humiliating for Susanna. He was described as being currently separated and looking for a woman aged between 35 and 45 years old.
Susanna’s relationship woes are yet another chapter in what has been called the ‘Curse of Strictly’ with fellow 2013 contestant Rachel Riley also recently announcing that her marriage was over. Despite no concrete reports of any new Strictly romances in the last series there have been some casualties.
Susanna’s co-host on the new ITV show Good Morning Britain will be 38-year old Charlotte Hawkins who ITV have tempted away from her role with Sky on their morning show Sky Sunrise.
It is hoped the new revamped ITV morning show will be able to gain the number one morning slot for the channel as they are currently only getting around half of the audience numbers that Susanna’s BBC Breakfast show is getting. The morning slot has been something of a problem for ITV over the last few years and they are desperate to improve their ratings. If ratings do improve over the coming months then Susanna can quickly earn back her salary for her new employers with the increased revenue they will get from companies wanting to advertise during the morning show.
Despite their new glamorous presenters there are some in the business who believe that it is not who is in front of the cameras that is ITV’s problem but rather what content they have on their breakfast show. Former ITV employee Dianne Nelmes, who was described as the Queen of Daytime Television during her 25 years with the channel, said that they has not learned the lessons of previous failures on the morning slot and there was too much show business and not enough news.
Although there is no official start date for Good Morning Britain it is expected to begin some time in April when Daybreak is scheduled to finish.
