Golden Globes 2014, Winners and Red Carpet Fashions – last night saw the first big movie awards event of the year and if anyone is looking at the Golden Globes to provide a clue for the winners of this year’s Oscars then it looks like it is worth putting some money on American Hustle.

The crime movie won 3 major awards including the prize for Best Film Comedy or Musical. It also won awards for 2 of its main actresses with Amy Adams picking up the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy award and last year’s Oscar-winning Best Actress

Somewhat surprisingly none of the cast of 12 Years A Slave came away with an award despite the movie receiving the top award of the night, Best Motion Picture Drama. Director Steve McQueen and actors Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o had all received nominations but left the evening empty-handed.

The other big awards of the money went to a number of different movies with Matthew McConaughey winning the Best Actor in a Drama award for his role as Ron Woodroof in the movie Dallas Buyers Club. McConaughey famously lost a huge amount of wait to play the role of an AIDS patient in the movie and has received much critical acclaim for his realistic portrayal.

Jared Leto, who played Reyon, a transgender woman, opposite McConaughey took home the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama award. The award is Leto’s biggest success so far but it goes with a large number of other awards he has won for this role and he too looks a good bet for an Oscar this year.

Much as was expected Cate Blanchett took home the Best Actress in a Drama award for playing Jasmine, a rich Manhattan socialite who loses everything and has to start all over again in San Francisco, where she is staying with her sister.

As far as the night’s red carpet fashions go there was no predominating colour on show but both red and pink gowns were popular. There were the usual red carpet winners and losers and a lot who just fell in between which in terms of media coverage could be argued to be an even greater sin!

Lupita Nyong'o

There was a rare fashion fail from former Oscar winner and wearer of one of the most loved Oscar gowns of all-time, Julia Roberts. For some strange reason Julia decided to wear what appeared to be a white blouse underneath her very stylish black strapless Dolce & Gabbana dress.

Another actress who normally looks great on these occasions also had a poor night as far as styling goes, with Jennifer Lawrence wearing a long white strapless gown that had some peculiar black bands around it. The bands looked not dissimilar to the sort of thing you might find trees or bulk bought food items and her outfit received some immediate criticism on social media with several men wearing spoof versions of the dress made from items they found their garage or home.

On the plus side there were some fashion winners with Best Actress winner Cate Blanchett wearing a beautiful  Valentino lace gown that featured a plunging back.

Another red carpet favourite last night was Lupita Nyong’o who was up for an award for her part in 12 Years A Slave. She wore a bright red dress by Ralph Lauren that featured cape detailing and was considered by many to be the mist stylish attendee of the night.

Another new name to watch out for is Wolf of Wall Street co-star Margot Robbie who looked stylish and sexy in her white Gucci gown that had a plunge front as well as a slit high up to her left thigh.

As well as the main awards event there were plenty of after event parties going on last night and this offered a chance for many to change into a more revealing outfit and relax a little. Among those who got the cameras turning their way were Modern Family actress Sofia Vergara who wore a long black Zac Posen gown to the main event before changing into a much more revealing plunge fronted gold and silver gown that showed off all of her curves.

Melissa Rauch and Kaley Cuoco

Big Bang Theory actresses Kaley Cuoco and Melissa Rauch posted a shot of them both holding their breasts with the caption ‘Holding our golden globes at the golden globes :)’ The actresses are both clearly enjoying the huge success of the show with Melissa recently being featured in a sexy s&m photo shoot in Maxim and Kaley still on a high after her New Year’s Eve wedding to tennis pro Rya Sweeting.

Although it was a very poor evening for the UK we did manage to provide one of the more shocking after-Globes party outfits. Lady Victoria Hervey wore a barely-there outfit that seemed to serve the main purpose of showing that she wasn’t wearing any underwear. The look seemed more like you would get from a reality show celebrity rather than a member of the aristocracy but it certainly got her noticed.

Here are the winners in the main award categories:

  • Best Motion Picture Drama – 12 Years A Slave
  • Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy – American Hustle
  • Best Director – Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity
  • Best Actor, Drama – Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club
  • Best Actor, Musical or Comedy – Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street
  • Best Actress, Drama – Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine
  • Best Actress, Musical or Comedy – Amy Adams for American Hustle
  • Best Supporting Actor – Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club
  • Best Supporting Actress – Jennifer Lawrence for American Hustle
