There has been a Strictly Christmas Special since 2004 and since 2006 it has been a part of UK Christmas Day tv celebrations. Although the first Christmas Specials featured celebrities who had taken part in the main series since 2010 the programme has featured different celebrities who have not taken part in the main series. This is normally due to them not being able to clear time in their schedules for such a big commitment.
This year the celebrities taking part were Ricky Norwood from Eastenders, singer and West End star Elaine Paige, Radio 1 dj Sara Cox, Rochelle Humes from The Saturdays and comedian Rufus Hound.
The winner of tonight’s Strictly Christmas Special was Rufus Hound who was partnered with 2012 Strictly dance professional winner Flavia Cacace. They danced a very unusual and entertaining tango to Never Do A Tango With An Eskimo.
The routine featured live huskies and a prop fishing line with a plastic fish ended up inflicting an injury on the 34-year old comedian. After their tango finished Tess Daly pointed out to Rufus that there was blood on his face.
The judges were all agreed that Rufus and Flavia had put on a great performance with Bruno describing it as a ‘nutcracker of a tango’ and Darcey Bussell, who looked very glamorous this evening, saying that she thought Rufus was ‘an unusually hot Eskimo.’
The dance scored an impressive 38 points from the 4 judges but it was actually Elaine Paige’s seasonal Cha Cha Cha to Jingle Bells with dance partner Pasha Kovalev which scored best with the panel of judges getting an almost perfect 39 points.
However the final result was down to the fact that the studio audience preferred Rufus Hound and Flavia’s tango and the special glittery star-shaped trophy was theirs.
Although some might think it surprising that Rufus was chosen to lift this year’s Strictly Christmas Special trophy he does have some pedigree as a dancer having previously won the Let’s Dance For Sports Relief competition in 2010. On that occasion Rufus danced his own version of Cheryl Cole’s Fight For This Love which the singer described as like ‘looking in a mirror.’
That is the end of Strictly for this year on television although anyone lucky enough to have tickets for the Strictly Live Tour will not have long to wait to see some more dance action as the tour begins in Birmingham at the National Indoor Arena on 17 January.
