Strictly Week 2, A Stunner From Sophie – this year’s series started off with some remarkably high (and deservedly so) scores for Week 1 and we saw tonight that this was, in most cases, not just a one-off.
As we told you earlier there was no Bruce for tonight with Claudia Winkleman stepping in at short notice to co-present with Tess Daly.
Let’s start off with the less adept performers before we tell you all about this week’s top of the class. Tony Jacklin seemed a little more relaxed than last week and did put in a marginally better performance but it seems that the judges didn’t agree as he only scored a total of 13 points with Craig again unable to score him any more than 2 points.
Another person from the bottom of the class is Hairy Biker Dave Myers who danced the American Smooth with his partner Karen Hauer. Sadly we started to miss last week’s manic Dave quite early on in the routine as tonight’s performance was a little dull. Although the judges admitted to liking Dave’s personality they aren’t the sort of people to let this influence how they score things and Dave ended up with a lowly 17 points, however he can console himself that unlike Tony he managed a slight (1 point) improvement on his first week’s score.
The other poor performance of the night came as we forecast from Julien Macdonald. He managed just 18 points for his frankly unconvincing tango and looks very very unlikely to get to the latter stages of the competition unless a miracle happens.
At the other end of the scale we had a great show opening tango from Susanna Reid and she looks to be having a great time as does her dance partner, new professional Kevin Clifton. They scored an impressive 31 points for their sexy dance and are looking quite likely to make it well into December if they carry on as they have started.
Natalie Gumede and her partner Artem Chigvintsev danced the waltz this week and their very stylish performance earned her a couple of 9’s from the judges and a total score of 34 points which is quite something for week 2 of the competition. We have had some years where the judges and audience have seemed impressed if the couples just manage to not fall over at week 2.
Last wek’s star performer was Abbey Clancy and despite a very good cha cha they can only manage 30 points from the judges. Abbey looked very disappointed after her great start last week and we can bet that she will put in plenty of hours in training this week to try to get back to the top of the judges leaderboard.
This week’s star performer was without any doubt Sophie Ellis-Bextor who danced a very accomplished Charleston with partner Brendan Cole. The routine was full of entertainment and content and the judges all praised Brendan’s choreography. The dance earned the pair an amazing Week 2 score of 36 points with straight 9’s across the board from all 4 judges.
Tomorrow sees the impact that the public vote has on who stays and who goes and you can catch the results show on BBC1 at 7.20pm.
