The Baz Luhrman directed movie has received some mixed reviews so far. Unusually for the opening movie of the festival it has already been released in the US. Luhrmann brushed off the early poor reviews of his adaptation of F, Scott Fitzgerald’s novel by saying that the critics had “horrendously criticised” the book when it was first reviewed in 1925.
As well as viewing the new Gatsby movie the invited gala audience also got to see a special performance by singer Lana Del Rey. The whole event was overseen by French actress Audrey Tatou who was given the title mistress of ceremonies for the evening. Tatou wore a summery daisy print dress from Red Valentino for her first showing at the festival.
All of the Great Gatsby main cast were there on the red carpet for the opening night of the festival with the movies 2 main stars Leonardo Di Caprio and Carey Mulligan leading the way.
Apart form the many movie stars seen making their way down the Cannes red carpet there were plenty of representatives from the world of fashion. Most notably 47-year old supermodel Cindy Crawford was there looking stunning in a cleavage baring Roberto Cavali white and gold gown. Other models on view included Cara Delavingne, who wore a sexy black see through Burberry gown, and Georgia May Jagger who wore an eye-catching bright red gown.
Another person who caused something of a stir on the Cannes red carpet was Beyonce’s sister Solange Knowles who wore a see-through beige gown with a nude leotard underneath. On such a cold Cannes evening it soon became pretty clear that she was not wearing a bra with her outfit.
The Cannes Film Festival is on for another 12 days and other movies to show include Only Lovers Left Alive, the new vampire movie from Jim Jarmusch, and Steven Soderbergh’s new biopic of over the top pianist and entertainer Liberace, starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon.
