Witherspoon and husband Jim Toth were pulled over by a police officer as they were driving through the Buckhead district in the north of Atlanta. The officer was concerned at their car weaving in and out of the lanes and having pulled them over to the side of the road he noted that Toth has dishevelled clothing and that his eyes appeared bloodshot. Having given him a breathalyzer test his score of 0.139 showed that he was well above the legal drink drive limit of 0.08.
All of this would have been a little bit of bad news for Witherspoon but then she decided to pull the “do you know who I am” line. This is clearly not the way to charm yourself into anyone’s good books and after continued back chat from her the officer asked the 37-year old Oscar-winning actress to “sit on her butt and be quiet.”
Unfortunately she still didn’t follow his advice and stated that she was a US citizen who was allowed to stand on American ground and having got out of the couple’s Ford Fusion vehicle she found herself placed in handcuffs and under arrest on a charge of interfering with the arrest of her husband.
Now if Lilo was the lady under arrest then this would probably not make it to the front of anyone’s celebrity newslist but as Reese Witherspoon is often described as America’s Sweetheart we are looking at a completely different story. This is one actress that is expected to look great in front of the cameras, whether they are movie cameras or cameras on the red carpet. Where we do not expect to see her face is in a mug shot released by the US Police.
Witherspoon quickly acted to limit the damage releasing this statement: “I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said.It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I’m very sorry for my behavior.”
It seems like we will not be seeing Reese in prison clothes anytime soon as her lawyer agreed on a deal with the court this morning that means she go through a pre-trial intervention program. This means that she will be able to avoid a conviction on her clean record. The court has set a further date of 22 May to check that she is complying with the program. You can expect the actress to arrive for this date on time and to be very polite to the judge!
If there is indeed no such thing as bad publicity then the producers behind her latest movie Mud must be delighted as it goes on general release today.
