The short movie is to be directed by Karl Lagerfeld and is being made to celebrate the centenary of Coco Chanel opening her first Chanel boutique in the upmarket French seaside town of Deauville.
The town was a natural choice for Chanel as it has long been a fashionable choice for the French upper class. As well as being the nearest seaside resort to Paris, the town has a strong cultural history being the basis for one of the major locations in Proust’s À la recherche du temps perdu. It has also been the site of an American movie festival, the Festival du Cinema Americain, since 1975.
Apart from her acting talent and good looks 27-year old Keira has probably also been chosen due to her existing links with the Chanel brand. She is currently the face fronting their campaign for Coco Mademoiselle perfume. As regular readers of these pages will remember the ad for Coco Mademoiselle with Keira rolling about naked on a bed was banned a short time ago.
Karl Lagerfeld has promised that every effort will be made to ensure that Deauville looks the same as it did in Coco Chanel’s time with detailed retro sets being built to turn back the years.
Apart from Keira’s links with Chanel there may be another reason that Lagerfeld has chosen her for the role as the rumour is that he has been asked to design a wedding dress for Keira. She got engaged to James Righton from the Klaxons last May and there has been much talk that the pair will get married this summer.
The as yet untitled Coco Chanel movie will debut at Chanel’s latest cruise collection show in Singapore this May.
