Kate has been married twice before, firstly to film director Jim Threapleton in 1998 after they met on the set of Hideous Kinky and then again in 2003 when she married American Beauty and Skyfall director Sam Mendes.
Ned was previously married to Eliza Pearson the heiress daughter of Viscount Cowdray. Their wedding was held at the Cowdray country estate near Midhurst in West Sussex. The estate is seen as the home of British polo, the favourite sport of many of the Royal Family.
Kate and Ned met whilst she was on holiday on Richard Branson’s luxury holiday destination Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands. At the time Kate was in a relationship with Burberry model Louis Dowler and the relationship was said to have ended during a stay at Necker in August 2011 when a fire broke out at the island’s main property. Kate received praise at the time of the fire when she rescued Richard Branson’s elderly mother from the burning building.
Ned, whose birth name was Abel Smith (not so rock’n’roll is it?) is a nephew of Richard Branson and works for his company Virgin Galactic, which famously deals in space trips for rich tourists who have been everywhere else. Ned’s mother Lindy is Sir Richard’s sister.
Kate’s spokesperson conformed that the couple had married earlier in December at a small private ceremony held in New York. The couple invited just 6 friends each to the ceremony, which was held in a converted barn. In fact neither the bride or groom’s parents attended the ceremony and were apparently even surprised to hear that a wedding had taken place.
Kate’s Titanic co-star Leonardo Di Caprio gave her away and Ned’s brother Jack was his best man.
It was announced this September that Kate and Ned had permanently relocated to the UK and were living together in a 15th Century estate in West Sussex. Their new move has not been without its problems however as the local parish council objected to the pair’s plans to erect a 2m gate and fence at the property saying that it believed the alterations were more suitable for an urban property than one in their small hamlet.
Kate has been amazingly successful in her movie career and as well as winning the Best Actress Oscar for her role in The Reader she also became the youngest person to get 6 Oscar nominations when her nomination for Best Actress for The Reader at the age of 33 surpassed the achievement of Bette Davis who was 34 when she received her 6th Oscar nomination for Now Voyager.
