Helen Mirren’s European Film Award

25 Sep

Helen Mirren Gets European Film Award – it has been announced today that Dame Helen Mirren will be receiving an honorary award from the European Film Academy.

She will be presented with the European achievement in world cinema 2012 award for her “outstanding body” of work.

Mirren began her movie career in 1969 with a topless appearance as wild Australian girl Cora Ryan in Michael Powell’s Age Of Consent. It was not however until 1980 that she had her breakthrough role as Bob Hoskins gangster character’s girlfriend Victoria in the classic The Long Good Friday.

After The Ling Good Friday she had no trouble in securing many interesting roles in films such as Cal, Where Angels Fear To Tread and Peter Greenaway’s The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover.

More recent roles for Mirren have included The Calendar Girls, Gosford Park, The Madness of King George and  The Queen which brought her a Best Actress Oscar.

Dame Helen said of today’s news of her European Film Award: “It was discovering the immense diversity of European filmmaking that gave me an enduring love and respect for the art form. This award is therefore a very meaningful honour. I would be proud to be counted as an actor in the European tradition.”

Mirren, who is married to American film director Taylor Hackford, is of part Russian and part English descent. She was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2003. It is thought that she had to be convinced to accept the honour by other theatrical Dames (Maggie Smith and Judi Dench?) as Mirren had turned down an earlier award of CBE in 1996.

Aside from her achievements in movies and on the theatrical stage Dame Helen is known for being in great shape for her age (she is 67 years old). She caused something of a stir in 2008 when she was photographed looking in fantastic shape wearing a red bikini whilst on holiday in Puglia. Earlier this year she was voted as the Number One Fantasy Older Woman in a survey of 18-24 year old men.

Dame Helen will receive her European Film award at the 25th European Film Awards ceremony on December 1 in Malta.
