Jenna-Louise Coleman in Doctor Who: Asylum of the Daleks

03 Sep

Jenna-Louise Coleman makes an early appearance in Doctor Who – the actress surprised everyone this weekend when she made an earlier than expected appearance in the first episode of the new series of Doctor Who.

In Saturday’s episode Asylum of the Daleks Jenna-Louise played the part of Oswin Oswald, a woman who was captured and then “converted” by the Daleks.

Asylum of the Daleks picked up audience figures of 6.4 million viewers not only upsetting X Factor but also increasing the figure picked up by the previous series’ opening show.

26-year old Jenna-Louise was better known for her roles in Waterloo Road, Emmerdale and Titanic before she picked up the part as the latest Doctor Who sidekick. It was though before Saturday’s episode that Jenna-Louise’s character would make her debut in the Christmas episode of the sci-fi series.

Sources have suggested that when the new sidekick is first shown in her proper role that she will be called Clara Oswin. It is not yet known exactly what the relationship between the characters of Oswin Oswald and Clara Oswin will turn out to be but as is often the case the rumour machine is already working out some theories.

Jenna-Louise has already picked up a lot of positive reaction for her performance. This is no doubt helped by the fact that she has twice been nominated for the Sexiest Female award at the British Soap Awards.

One other feature that apparently helped Jenna-Louise to get the part as Matt Smith’s sidekick when she auditioned for the role was the fact that she was able to talk faster than the Doctor.

Steven Moffat, the main man behind the Doctor Who series, had the following to say about Jenna-Louise’s opening performance: “I hope you all got a nice surprise when Jenna popped up in Doctor Who several months early. If so, that surprise came to you courtesy of the frankly magnificent ladies and gentlemen of the press, and of the many Doctor Who forums and blogs too.”

“This show has been seen at four separate screenings, across four different countries and yet not one person gave one spoiler.”

“From all of us on Doctor Who, a heartfelt thank you for helping us tell our story.’ Miss Coleman will not appear in the series again until Christmas.”

Doctor Who is still very popular worldwide as the new episode Asylum of the Daleks premiered on ABC’s iview service (much like BBC’s iPlayer) immediately the episode had been shown on BBC this Saturday.

Just seen the Christmas episode for the fourth time and Jenn-Louise was totally amazing! She swept the Doctor off his feet. I’ve never seen the Doctor infatuated with a woman upon their first meeting. Then she kissed him, WOW! You could see the sparks. The Doctor has truely found a companion, at last.
