The story is based on the real life experience of Mark O’Brien, an American poet who was paralysed from the neck down after contracting polio as a young boy. He found himself in an iron lung and after talking to his priest he hired a sex surrogate to help him lose his virginity.
in the movie the part of Mark O’Brien is played by John Hawkes (Deadwood, Winter’s Bone) and his priest is played by the Oscar-nominated William H Macy (Fargo, Seabiscuit).
The Sessions received some great reviews when it was shown at this year’s Sundance Film Festival although you may not have realised it as the film was called The Surrogate when it was shown at the festival.
Helen Hunt’s performance as a sex worker has gained her such great notices that she is already being viewed as a frontrunner for the Best Actress Oscar. It is being viewed as easily her best movie performance since she won the Oscar in 1997 for her role as Carol Connelly in As Good As It Gets.
Hunt has certainly stepped out of her comfort zone with the new role as she is viewed in the US in a similar way to Felicity Kendal is here in the UK. Hunt’s role as Jamie Buchman in the 90’s sitcom Mad About You saw her as a wife not unlike that played by Kendal in the 70’s/80’s UK sitcom The Good Life. Both women played the role of adored wife but although both were cute they did not have the usual sort of sex appeal seen on the small screen in such roles.
49-year old Hunt appears nude in the role of sex worker and looks set to lose her goody two shoes image if not pick up a 2nd Oscar as well/
The Sessions is set for general cinema release in the US on 26 October although it looks like we will have to wait until 2013 for the film’s UK release.
