Scott’s body was recovered from the water at San Pedro in Los Angeles Harbour after a number of people alerted the emergency services having seen a man jump from the Vincent Thomas Bridge just after 12.30 pm local time. Scott’s body was recovered from the water a few hours later and a contact note was found in the late director’s Toyota Prius, which was parked on the bridge and later in the day a suicide note was found at his office. Unconfirmed reports have suggested that Scott was suffering from inoperable brain cancer.
As well as Top Gun Scott was also responsible for a large number of other movies including The Hunger (1983), Beverley Hills Cop II (1987), Days of Thunder (1990), The Last Boy Scout (1991), True Romance (1993), Crimson Tide (1995), Enemy of the State (1998), Man On Fire (2004) and The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009). Although he did not always achieve the critical acclaim that his older brother Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator) enjoyed as can be seen by this partial list of his movies he was very successful at the box office and his films had a large following.
Tony Scott, who was born in North Shields on Tyneside in 1944, had recently been rumoured to be working with Tom Cruise on a sequel to his biggest success Top Gun.
As well as his work in the movies Scott also produced several tv series including the recent hit legal drama The Good Wife, which was shown on CBS.
News of his death soon produced a host of tributes from those in the film industry, one of the first coming from fellow director Ron Howard who said via Twitter: “No more Tony Scott movies. Tragic day.”
Bafta chairman Tim Corrie said: “He was a true pioneer. A great film-maker and a wonderful human being. He will be sorely missed by people all over the world.”
Keira Knightley, who starred in Scott’s 2005 film Domino, said: “Tony Scott was one of the most extraordinary, imaginative men I ever worked with. It was a privilege to have spent the time I did with him. He was a fire cracker and one of the world’s true originals.”
Tony Scott was married to the actress Donna Scott (Donna Wilson) who appears in her husbands movies Enemy of the State, The Last Boy Scout, Deja Vu and Days of Thunder as well as appearing in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997) and Water For Elephants (2011). The couple have twin sons Frank and Max who were born in 2000.
