Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah, Chris Hoy and Bradley Wiggins on X Factor – after the massive success of our athletes at the London 2012 Olympic Games it seems that Simon Cowell was keen to get in on the action and gain a share of the huge public support for Team GB.
In a deal rumoured to have cost him some £1m Cowell has signed up the gold medal winning heptathlete, runner and 2 cyclists to appear in a X Factor Olympics Special show. It is now also being reported by a show insider that 26-year old Jess, 29-year old Mo, 32-year old Bradley and 36-year old Chris will also each take responsibility for mentoring one of the different categories in the lead up to the live finals stage of the X Factor.
After the Olympics television coverage on BBC received such a positive response from both the critics and the public ITV bosses will no doubt be delighted that they have managed to secure such high-profile sports stars to appear on their show.
The X Factor Olympics Special show is set to be a celebration of both sport and music. The X Factor acts will apparently have songs chosen for them by their “sports mentors” which celebrate sporting achievements with such classics as Spandau Ballet’s single “Gold” and Tina Turner’s “Simply The Best” being among the songs the athletes can choose from.
Although none of the 4 athletes are believed to have any special musical abilities the idea behind the signing is that Jess, Bradley, Chris and Mo will be able to inspire the X Factor hopefuls with their motivational advice.
Simon Cowell was so keen to sign up the 4 sports stars that he is said to have approached them all just a few hours after the Olympics closing ceremony had taken place. Apart from the lure of a lot of cash Cowell is said to have told the athletes that with them all taking part in the Olympics Special show (said to be screened on September) that he believes their participation may make the show the most-watched in the show’s history.
He is said to have been further encouraged to make the signings after discovering that BBC had signed up a number of Olympic stars for the new series of Strictly Come Dancing. It is thought that both Rebecca Adlington and Victoria Pendleton are likely to be in Strictly when it returns to our screens this autumn.
