His first big break came in 1978 with the role of Arthur Parker, a sheet music salesman, in the Dennis Potter tv series Pennies From Heaven.
The highlight of Hoskin’s career was his performance as George, a driver for a prostitute, in the 1986 movie Mona Lisa, a role for which he received an Oscar nomination. Despite being highly fancied for the Best Actor Oscar Hoskins eventually lost out to Paul Newman who won for his role in The Colour of Money.
As well as his tough Cockney style roles Hoskins also featured in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Hook, Neverland and Super Mario Bros., although he said later that he regretted taking on the role of Mario.
In a statement revealing the actor’s retirement his agent said: “Bob Hoskins wishes to announce that he will be retiring from acting, following his diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease last autumn.
“He wishes to thank all the great and brilliant people he has worked with over the years, and all of his fans who have supported him during a wonderful career.
“Bob is now looking forward to his retirement with his family, and would greatly appreciate that his privacy be respected at this time.”
Hoskins has 2 children by his first wife Jane and a further 2 with his second wife Linda. The couple live in North London and Hoskins has said that he is now most looking forward to having grandchildren.
Parkinson’s Disease is estimated to affect around 127k people in the UK. The condition is caused by the loss of brain cells producing the chemical dopamine and although Parkinson’s differs from patient to patient it often results in the sufferer having a tremor or shake, slow movements and unsteady balance.
Without doubt the most famous sufferer of Parkinson’s is Muhammad Ali who was diagnosed in 1984 at the age of 42-years old. The actor Michael J Fox also has the disease having been diagnosed at just 30 years of age. Fox now runs the Michael J Fox Foundation, which has so far raised $297m for research into the disease.
Fearne announced on Twitter and her blog yesterday evening: ‘Some lovely news… Jesse and I are very happy to announce we are having a baby.
‘We are over the moon, morning sickness aside (me, not Jess) and looking forward to the little Cotton Wood’s arrival.’
The couple have been together since July last year after Fearne split from her fiance the US skateboarder Jesse Jenkins. Fearne has been quite open about how happy her new man has made her. Fearne seems to have been a big hit with Ronnie Wood who said earlier in the year: ‘Fearne’s a beautiful girl. They’re lovely together. I met her when she came to a Faces gig with Jesse at Cornbury Festival. I very much approve.
‘She’s rock ‘n’ roll. I do wonder if she’ll become my daughter-in-law any time soon.’
News of the pregnancy will come as no surprise to Fearne’s fans as rumours have been circulating for some weeks after she had been seen in a number of baggy jumpers and oversized clothes.
Fearne’s best friend Holly Willoughby wrote on her Twitter page this morning: ‘Just the best news! @Fearnecotton welcome to motherhood my darlin! Love you loads!!!! Xxx’
Fearne, who presents the late morning show on Radio 1 between 10am-12.45pm, has not revealed just how far along in her pregnancy she is but no doubt we will all find out in due course.
