Borgnine had a long career and was acting well into his 90’s with a part in hospital drama ER in 2009 being his last significant role.
With his tough guy face and stocky build he had a number of strong roles including parts in Bad Day at Black Rock, The Dirty Dozen, From Here To Eternity and Escape From New York. It was however from a much gentler role in a movie that Borgnine found fame. In Marty he played the part of Marty Piletti a 34-year old unmarried butcher from The Bronx who fears that he is too unattractive to ever find romance or get married like all of his brothers or sisters.
His sensitive portrayal of Marty won the 1955 Best Actor Oscar for Borgnine and in case you thought it was an easy year then the list of nominees should clear that up as it included James Dean, Jimmy Cagney, Frank Sinatra and Spencer Tracy.
The actor started his movie career in 1951 and in a very long career also had a number of highly successful television roles. These included the role of Lt Commander Quinton McHale in McHale’s Navy and also the aviator Dominic Santini in the 1980’s series Airwolf. Younger folk might know Borgnine better from his voicing of the character Mermaid Man in SpongeBob SquarePants.
The actor was a well-loved character off-screen and he had many tributes paid to him today. Our own Mark Gatiss of Doctor Who and Sherlock fame wrote: “Farewell to the mighty Ernest Borgnine. A lovely career & working till the end! Can we show ‘Marty’ on TV, please?”
Borgnine’s manager wrote: “The industry has lost someone great, the calibre of which we will never see again.
“A true icon. But more importantly, the world has lost a sage and loving man who taught us all how to ‘grow young'”.
Keegan, who currently plays the part of Tina McIntyre in Coronation Street, appears to be high on the shopping list of the Strictly Come Dancing team. This sets us up for another battle between the channels as we saw recently with the whole Britain’s Got Talent v The Voice thing.
It seems that ITV are not at all keen to lose Michelle to the Beeb and they have already stated as such through a source saying: “The Beeb can dream on. For starters, Michelle has some big storylines coming up at the end of the year.
“And if she was going to do anything outside Corrie then we’d want her on Dancing on Ice.”
The Corrie barmaid has also been talking about why she and The Wanted’s Max George called off their engagement. Michelle told Fabulous magazine: “We’re not engaged any more, but not because we fell out or there was an argument. It was just there was no chance of us getting married any time soon because of our schedules.
“He’s away in America most of the time now and we just had a word about it. I’m a traditionalist so if I’m engaged, I want to get married and that’s not happening soon.
“I was getting asked by everyone: ‘Have you set a date? Have you been shopping with your mum? Have you chosen your dress?’ So we just thought that we’d just say we’re not engaged and then nobody will ask and there’s no pressure.”
