Although Murray took the first set against Federer and from the beginning of the 2nd set looked likely to dominate that set for a while Federer soon began to move into another gear like so many great champions have done to their opponents before.
It had been three and a half years since Federer had taken a major tennis title with a win at the 2010 Australian Open and at 30 years and 335 days old he became Wimbledon’s oldest men’s champion since Arthur Ashe won the title in 1975. Federer’s age was one reason that many thought it to be Murray’s best chance of victory but as Murray found out his age was no indication of his fitness or his resolve.
After the final Murray won a lot of new fans with a speech that was quite moving and miles away from his usual style saying to the crowd: “I’m getting closer,
I was told after my semi-final that this was my best chance, Roger’s 30 now, but he’s not bad for a 30-year-old, he played a great tournament. Congratulations, you deserve it.”
Murray has been coached by Ivan Lendl for the last 6 months and the Wimbledon title is the only one of the 4 tennis majors that Lendl didn’t win during his career. Unfortunately Murray has now equalled Lendl’s record of losing his first 4 major tennis finals. One monkey off of the Scot’s back today is the fact that by winning the first set he has got his first set in a major as he failed to win a single set in his previous 3 major final attempts at the Australian Open in 2010 and 2011 and the US Open in 2008.
The match was watched by millions of expectant Brits on tv and in the crowd to cheer Murray on were Kate Middleton and her sister Pippa as well as David Cameron, the Prime Minister.
The final result was a record equalling (Pete Sampras is the other player) 7th win for Roger Federer 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4. The win also gives the Swiss back the World Number One spot.
A source talking to US Weekly said that the actress who was born in New York but maintains joint US and UK citizenship gave birth in London this weekend but refused to divulge details of the weight, name or sex of the child.
Miller and Sturridge have been together for just over a year and first dated shortly after Miller split from Jude Law for the second time in February 2011. Miller’s previous relationship with Law often hit the headlines and the first break-up was famously caused when he admitted to an affair with his children’s nanny back in 2005. The final break-up in 2011 was said to be as a result of Miller’s unhappiness about the closeness of Law’s relationship with his ex Sadie Frost.
Her new man seems to be much more on her wavelength as the couple have mostly kept out of the media spotlight and enjoyed a romantic pre-baby holiday this May in the Italian resort of Portofino. They are said to have got engaged in January this year during a romantic holiday in Paris but they are private enough to have kept the details to themselves.
We guess that after her relationship with Jude Law, Sienna is keen to keep the details of her private life just that, private!
Although not as famous as his fiance Tom Sturridge is also an actor and appears as Carlo Marx in the recent film adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s On The Road. His character in the film is a thinly veiled portrayal by Kerouac of the Beat Generation poet Allen Ginsberg.
Sturridge has other acting links as his mother Phoebe Nicholls was also in the profession being mostly known for her role as Cordelia Flyte in the 1981 television adaptation of Brideshead Revisited. She also had parts in many other classic tv dramas including Van der Valk, Lewis, Kavanagh QC, Foyle’s War and Spooks.
Sturridge has often been seen with his best friend Twilight star Robert Pattinson and he and Miller both turned up to Pattinson’s birthday celebration at Claridges this May which was a rare showing by Miller of her “baby bump.”
