Kevin Costner v Stephen Baldwin, Danny O’Donoghue and Bo Bruce

05 Jun

Kevin Costner v Stephen Baldwin trial – Baldwin and his pal Spyridon Contogouris are seeking over $21m in damages from Costner and his business partner Patrick Smith.

It is alleged that Costner and Smith cheated Baldwin and Contogouris out of their share of an $18m deal for BP to buy oil separating centrifuges that had been developed by Ocean Therapy Solutions, a company owned by Costner. The oil and water separating devices were tried out by BP in the aftermath of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010 when the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig suffered an explosion in the Macondo Prospect region.

It must have looked like a scene from a movie as the two Hollywood stars faced each other from opposite sides of a New Orleans courtroom. The District Judge, Martin L C Feldman told the jurors they could not be swayed by the celebrity status of Baldwin and Costner. He said: “Celebrity has no place in this courtroom or in any of the issues that need to be resolved.”

Costner’s lawyer Wayne Lee has stated that his client played no part in the decision of Baldwin and Contogouris to sell their shares in the company saying: “Kevin Costner is here for one reason and one reason only: he’s famous.”

James Cobb the lawyer representing Baldwin and Contogouris said that Costner and Smith has spun a web of lies and the case was all about deception fuelled by power and greed.

Kevin Costner has won 2 Academy Awards and appeared in a number of popular movies over the year including Field of Dreams, Tin Cup, Robin Hood:Prince of Thieves and Dances With Wolves. As well as his investment in Ocean Therapy Solutions Costner also owns the Midnight Star Casino in Deadwood, South Dakota which is full of memorabilia from his movies.

Stephen Baldwin is the youngest of the Baldwin brothers acting dynasty and has appeared in The Usual Suspects, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas and The Flyboys. In July 2009 Baldwin filed for a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition saying he owed in excess of $2.3m and his assets were a New York property valued at $1.1m.

Danny O’Donoghue and Bo Bruce – the pair have spent much of the Jubilee weekend denying they are involved in a relationship.

During Saturday’s final of The Voice, where Bo lost out to Leanne Mitchell, the pair sang a duet together with obvious chemistry between the two raising a few eyebrows. Even host Holly Willoughby couldn’t stop herself from commenting after they had sung Professor Green’s Read All About It together.

Adding to the rumours is the fact that Danny has now split up with his long-term girlfriend, Lithuanian model Irma Mali. Irma was a noticeable absentee during Saturday’s final and she confirmed today that she had indeed split up with O’Donoghue. Irma and Danny got together after she appeared in the video for The Script’s song Breakeven.

Danny seemed even more emotional than usual during the final and had tears in his eyes as he spoke of Bo’s courage dealing with her mother’s illness and her past problems with drink and drugs.

Bo responded to Danny’s words by saying: “This experience wouldn’t have been the same if I hadn’t had Danny. From the word go he had confidence in me. I get on very well with Danny, we’ve got a lot in common.”

Danny’s spokesperson has released a statement denying that there is a romantic relationship between him and Bo and saying that they are just friends but today’s confirmation from Irma of the end of her 4-year relationship with Danny is only likely to increase speculation.

If you missed the final of The Voice this weekend you can have a look here at Danny and Bo singing Read All About It and see what you think!
