She had battled cancer for some while and was convinced that she had contracted the illness after inhaling toxic particles following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001.
Summer was a regular in the charts during the 1970’s & 80’s and together with record producer Giorgio Moroder was said to define the disco era with her distinctive sound. The sound was different to anything that had been heard before with the prominent use of electronic sequencers.
She had a string of hits during her career including I Feel Love, Last Dance, Love To Love You Baby, Hot Stuff, MacArthur Park, On The Radio and Bad Girls.
She was born Donna Gaines on 31 December 1948 in Boston, Massachusetts and like many black singers she first started singing at her local church. She won a part in the musical Hair in the late 60’s and moved to Germany for several years . Whilst in Europe she met and married Austrian actor Helmuth Sommer in 1972 and after they divorced found her stage name by anglicising his last name to become Summer.
In 1975 she recorded Love To Love You Baby with Giorgio Moroder and this was aimed at the disco market with a special 17 minute version released for clubs as well as a shorter version for radio play. With her recognisable vocals and the moans and groans Summer said later that her sound came from thinking how Marilyn Monroe might have recorded the song.
During her career Summer received 17 Grammy Award nominations with 5 of these resulting in actual Grammy Awards for the songs Last Dance (1979), Hot Stuff (1980), He’s A Rebel (1984), Forgive Me (1985) and Carry On (1998).
She is survived by her husband, singer and producer Bruce Sudano, their daughters, Brooklyn and Amanda, her daughter, Mimi, from a previous marriage and four grandchildren.
Micaela Schaefer – the German model might not have been well-known in the UK before but that looks set to change after she turned up at the German premiere of Men In Black III wearing a dress made of strips of video tape.
Apparently she is known in Germany for appearing in Germany’s Next Top Model and advertising bikinis. She seems to have found an outfit to wear to the premiere that actually manages to show more of her body than almost any bikini could. The entire outfit consisted of the video tape dress, a silver belt and chain, a black thong and a pair of black stilettos.
She certainly managed to steal the limelight at the movie premiere, we are not sure if this means the film was that bad or just that a nearly naked model on the red carpet will always outscore the 3rd reincarnation of a movie franchise?
In case you thought that Micaela’s dress was representative of those on show during the night then you would be wrong as Nicole Scherzinger turned up looking stunning in a clinging purple Herve Leroux gown.
It is clear that 27-year old Micaela was out to get some headlines and also that she has been going to the Jodie Marsh/Katie Price subtle dressing school. Let’s see if we hear or see anymore (is there much more to see?) of Micaela or if her only contribution to showbiz will be to turn up in articles celebrating embarrassing red carpet outfits.
