Although it sounds like the name of a group it is just the Welsh singer whose real name is Marina Diamandis. Her family roots are Greek and the name translates to Diamonds which she explains refers to her fans. Marina says on her MySpace page “I’m Marina. You are the diamonds.”
Marina has been described as a Greek Kate Bush and also compared to Florence and the Machine. Her new album is the follow-up to her 2010 debut album The Family Jewels.
It was in 2010 that Marina first came to a lot of people’s attention as she appeared on the BBC’s Sound of 2010 list, the main award going that year to Ellie Goulding. The award has signalled the rise of a number of acts including Mika, Jessie J and Adele.
Marina will be especially pleased to get the good news about her Number 1 album as she has just had to cancel a UK tour on doctor’s advice after suffering from throat problems.
Her story gives hope to anyone trying to start out in the music business as she originally began by producing her own tracks using the Garageband app on her Apple Mac.. After getting some more cash together she managed to produce her own EP before she was discovered by a record company in 2008. Refreshingly Marina says that she has a different sound as she does not come from a musical background and probably doesn’t know what she is doing!
The new album was preceded by the release of a single from the album and Primadonna became her highest charting single to date getting to Number 7 in the UK singles chart. The next single from the album is going to be Power and Control.
Marina has described the Electra Heart album as being based on a fictional character representing the dark side of US suburban life.
Marina was nominated in this year’s NME Awards in the Hottest Female category, the award finally going to Hayley Williams, lead singer of US rock group Paramore
Holly, who recently won the Best Celebrity Cleavage title, was seen last weekend wearing a much lower cut dress than she had worn before on the programme. This format certainly worked during Holly’s time on ITV’s Dancing On Ice when her plunging necklines won her the nickname Holly Willoughbooby.
Although The Voice started off the series getting higher ratings than Britain’s Got Talent the last 2 weeks have seen the ITV show get the better figures in the ratings war.
An insider from The Voice told The Daily Star: “We know it’s all about the voice but on Saturday night it was all about the boobs!
Holly looked sensational. She’s just what the show needs and gives fans two good reasons to tune in every weekend.”
As both shows move nearer towards their finals then we can expect things to get even dirtier in the ratings war between them as both ITV and the BBC will be keen to win the Saturday night primetime ratings battle.
Holly has been one of our favourites for some time in this country and has been voted onto the FHM 100 Sexiest Women list every year since 2005.
