Sunday Times Rich List 2012 – today see the publication of the annual survey of the richest people in Britain.

This year for the 7th year running the list is headed by the steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal who is worth £12.7 billion. Although you might think this has meant that the CEO of Arcelor Mittal has had a good year in fact over the last 12 months his personal wealth has declined by £4.8 billion, easily the biggest fall in wealth of anyone on the Rich List.

In 2nd place on the list is Alisher Usmanov, the Russian iron ore producer who also has a large investment in Facebook and a 30% stake in Arsenal football club. His wealth is £385 million behind that of Mittal and has also fallen over the last year, albeit not by as much as Mittal. Usmanov is worth £85m less than before but he has made charitable donations this year of £91m.

The 3rd place is taken by another footballer club owner with the more well-known Roman Abramovich who is owner of Chelsea football club although his wealth comes from his ownership of the private investment company Millhouse LLC.

The list gives the total wealth of the richest 1000 people in Britain as £414 billion.

There are also details of the charitable donations and pledges from the top 100 philanthropists which have increased this year by £220m to £1.89 billion.

Although the people on the list have unimaginable wealth this is still not enough to get them near the richest people in the world. The world’s richest person is still Carlos Slim, the Mexican businessman who interests in many different areas but has made most of his fortune in telecommunications. Slim is worth $69 billion, which places him well ahead of Microsoft’s Bill Gates who is now worth $61 billion.

The Sunday Times Rich List is compiled using identifiable wealth such as property, stocks and shares in quoted companies, works of art and racehorses but does not include private information such as bank accounts.

British Soap Awards 2012 – the awards have been held at the London TV Centre and saw Eastenders take the top prize of Best British Soap.

There were 7 awards for the BBC soap, which also won Best British Soap Award last year,  the same as its ITV rival Coronation Street lifted on the night.

There was quite a battle going on among the girls from the soaps last night as many of the young soap stars were in a different competition to see who could show the most flesh. The actresses showing the most cleavage on the night were Coronations Street’s Brooke Vincent, Eastenders’ Preeya Kalidas, Coronation Street’s Catherine Tyldesley and Emmerdale’s Chelsea Halfpenny.

The Sexiest Female Award was taken home again by Coronation Street actress Michelle Keegan who plays the part of Tina McIntyre. Other winners on the night included former Eastenders’ stalwart Pam St Clement who was the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award for her role as Pat Butcher in the soap.

The winner of the award for Best Actor didn’t come from either of the big 2 soaps as Emmerdale’s Danny Miller (Aaron Livesy) beat Corrie’s Chris Gascoyne and Eastenders’ Shane Richie to the title.

Most of the biggest award categories such as best soap and best actor and actress were voted for by viewers but some other awards were decided by a panel of judges.

The awards were hosted by Phillip Schofield and can be seen on ITV1 this Wednesday at 8pm. You can make your own mind up then about people ‘s red carpet outfits.
