Top Gun Sequel, Cannes Film Festival Jury

26 Apr

Top Gun Sequel – it looks like we are definitely going to see a follow-up to the 1986 classic flying movie.

While Paramount Studios top man Adam Goodman was talking to The Hollywood Reporter about the possibility of a 5th Mission Impossible movie he let slip that this is not the first movie that Tom Cruise will be making with them. Goodman said: “We’ll likely make a Top Gun sequel with Tom Cruise first. Jerry Bruckheimer would produce, with Tony Scott returning to direct. All parties are moving ahead. We’ve hired Peter Craig to write the script.”

Back in 2008 there was talk of a Top Gun sequel with the thought at that time that the movie would be centred around Cruise’s character of Maverick returning to the Top Gun school as an instructor. In a spin on the original plot Maverick would have to deal with a cocky female fighter pilot.

In the original Top Gun movie Pete “Maverick” Mitchell flies an F-14A Tomcat fighter plane with the help of his Radar Intercept Officer Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. After an incident at the start of the movie involving their Tomcat and some Russian MiG-28s Maverick and Goose get sent to the Top Gun school at Naval Air School in Miramar. During the encounter with the MiGs Maverick effectively saves the life of his colleague and wingman Cougar and his RIO Merlin (played by Tim Robbins).

As well as all of the classic flying scenes from the movie it is also well-remembered for the soundtrack. It included a number of classic songs including Kenny Loggins “Danger Zone”, Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away”, and the main Top Gun anthem written by Harold Faltermeyer and Steve Stevens. The main Top Gun anthem went on to win a Grammy award for the Best Pop Instrumental Performance. It was played on guitar by Steve Stevens.
