The festival is a spin-off of the main Sundance Film Festival which is held every January in Park City, Utah. The Sundance Film Festival is the largest independent cinema festival in the US and was started in 1978 after an initial idea from Robert Redford.
The first US festival featured a number of different films including Deliverance and Midnight Cowboy and the idea was to feature US made movies and help increase the profile of the business in Utah.
The US festival now gives out around 30 prizes and the main prizes this year went to “The House I Live In” which was voted as Best Documentary by the Grand Jury and “Beasts of the Southern Wild” which took home the Grand Jury award for Best Drama. The festival now celebrates world cinema as well as US-based movies and there are a number of world cinema awards handed out each year. One of the main winners in this year’s festival was the Chilean biopic “Violetta” about the life of singer Violetta Parra which won the World Cinema Jury Prize for Best Drama.
It was in March last year that Robert Redford announced that they would be holding a new Sundance Festival in London. It is the first time the Sundance has travelled outside of the US and Robert Redford said of the new venture: “We are excited to partner with AEG Europe to bring a particular slice of American culture to life in the inspired setting of The O2, and in this city of such rich cultural history. It is our mutual goal to bring to the UK, the very best in current American independent cinema, to introduce the artists responsible for it, and in essence help build a picture of our country that is broadly reflective of the diversity of voices not always seen in our cultural exports.”
The Sundance London Film Festival will see 14 films receive their UK premiere this year. As well as movies the festival will also feature a number of other arts events including live music from Placebo, Martina Topley-Bird and Tricky.
The London Sundance Film Festival opens on 26 April with events being held at the O2 Arena in Greenwich. The festival goes on until 29 April and tickets can be ordered via the Sundance website.
Not only did Bournemouth triumph in the UK awards it also came in a very respectable 4th in the list of top European beaches. This means that Bournemouth beach ranks ahead of any of the beaches in France, Portugal and most of the top Spanish beach resorts.
Beaches in Cornwall did especially well in this year’s awards with 4 Cornish resorts in the Top 10 including surfing favourites St Ives and Newquay, which were placed in 4th and 6th places respectively.
Sadly no Uk or European beaches made it into this year’s World Beach Top 10 where the top award was taken by Providenciales, a small Caribbean island, which managed to beat off competition from heavyweights such as Miami Beach, Honolulu, Cancun and Rio.
