Engelbert Humperdinck – when we were told that there would be a legendary name to represent the UK in this year’s Eurovision we doubt many people immediately thought of Engelbert Humperdinck.
The man who was born as Arnold Dorsey, also known as Gerry Dorsey and much better known as Engelbert last had a hit over 40 years ago. He spent has spent a large part of his career performing in Las Vegas and is known as being a smooth performer, normally turning up in a dinner jacket and bow tie.
He first found fame in 1967 and is best known for his songs “Release Me” and “Last Waltz.” His break in Las Vegas came courtesy of legendary singer (and drinker) Dean Martin.
His son Scott is now his manager after a previous manager turned down a chance for him to perform on the Gorillaz album Plastic Beach without even asking Engelbert what he thought. He has since said that he will definitely perform on one of their tracks if he is asked again.
The UK’s entry is an interesting mix of the classic and contemporary as 75-year old Engelbert will be performing a track written by Martin Terefe and Sacha Skarbek, who have written hits for Adele, Mary J Blige and Lana Del Rey.
The night could be an interesting battle between the young and the old and you would write Hump off at your peril. He has recently performed a series of concerts in Belgium, Israel, Romania and The Netherlands and remains popular in many parts of Europe.
We all hope that Engelbert’s choice may bring a return to victory for the UK as our last win was back in 1997 with Katrina and the Waves.
In case you wondered about that strange choice of name it was chosen for him by manager Gordon Mills (also Tom Jones manager) in 1965 and is based on a 19th Century German opera composer.
We know at least one of his presents as his manager, Scooter Braun, presented Justin with a $100k Fisker Karma sports car live on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. The ultra stylish car has a number of special features including an interior made of reclaimed wood and the largest solar roof on any production car. The 403hp car also runs for 50 miles on electric power before the petrol kicks in. It has a top speed of 125mph and accelerates from 0-60 in 6.3 seconds.
Justin was first discovered when his mother posted videos of him performing his songs on YouTube in 2008. Quickly after he hit YouTube he was signed up by Braun and shortly after this started working with Usher. By 2009 he had already had a Canadian Number 1 album and was still only 15-years old.
He has been going put with Selena Gomez for over a year and she posted on Twitter: “Happy birthday to my best friend in the whole world!!! Have a great birthday baby!
Justin is now legally able to buy property in the US and he is said to have his eye on Ashton Kutcher’s $10m Hollywood bachelor pad. Also on his shopping list are a couple of properties in Calabases, the area of California famous for the Kardashians and Britney Spears. Time will tell where Justin decides to settle. Wherever he goes we can guess there will be a number of young ladies camping nearby.
Despite all the excitement surrounding his birthday Justin has found time to tell his fans that his new single “Boyfriend” will be released on 26 March.
