Cheryl Baker – Bucks Fizz singer and recent Popstar to Operastar finalist Cheryl is appearing tonight with her family on All Star Family Fortunes. The programme is to be shown on ITV1 tonight at 7pm. Cheryl and her family will be competing against dj Trevor Nelson and his family for the chance to win cash for their chosen charities.
As well as being able to re-invent herself over recent years Cheryl has been a constant supporter of charitable causes. One of the charities Cheryl has supported over recent years includes HeadFirst, who she ran for in the London Marathon this year. The charity was founded in the 1980’s shortly after Bucks Fizz had a very serious coach crash. Cheryl founded HeadFirst as a thank you to the medical profession for saving her fellow band member Mike Nolan’s life after he developed a blood clot on the brain after the coach crash.
Cheryl has been in the headlines in recent years as one of the people advertising for weight loss company Jenny Craig. She managed to lose 2.5 stone over a period of 6 months using the Jenny Craig system.
She has been very open with the public over problems she has encountered and as well as her weight loss problems she has talked openly about her problems with the menopause and how it resulted in hair loss. In the hope that it would help others she also talked about her IVF treatment, which enabled her to have her twin girls.
Oktoberfest – the world’s biggest beer festival starts today in Munich.
The festival dates back to 1810 when a celebration was held for the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. This year’s Oktoberfest will run for 2 weeks and claims to be the world’s biggest festival.
The event is characterised by great halls of men drinking lager, served by buxom German women wearing the traditional tight waisted, low-cut, dirndl outfit. There are 14 main areas (called tents) which serve beer to around 80k people at a time.
The beer served has to be the traditional Wiesn Maerzen and you will only find 6 different Munich breweries serving at the huge festival, although you may recognise some of the names, such as Lowenbrau, from your local. It is served in the traditional 1 litre size glasses and will set you back just under £8 per drink.
Everyone sits at the large shared wooden tables inside the huge tents. You will need to get there early in the day as the seats go quickly and the rule is no seat, no drink!
Apart from all the drinking the only real thing to do apart from sing boisterously is try the traditional Bavarian food on offer.
One pastime which may be linked to the large amounts of alcohol being consumed is that of “fingahackin”, where 2 men interlock their middle fingers and try to pull each other over the middle of the table.
