Liz McColgan – the former 10k metres Olympic silver medallist from Scotland has appeared in court in Arbroath charged with assaulting her ex-husband. Peter is also a former athlete and represented Northern Ireland in the steeplechase as well as also representing Great Britain at the 1991 World Championships. The couple, who have 5 children separated last year. Liz is alleged to have repeatedly punched him on the head and body before throwing his clothes out of a window. She has denied both this charge and a charge of threatening and abusive behaviour and will stand trial on 21 November this year.
Shirley Bassey – the BBC has announced it will be showing a bio-drama of Dame Shirley Bassey’s life, called “Shirley Bassey: A Very British Diva”. The programme will be shown on BBC2 as part of a series about mixed race life in the UK. Ruth Negga, from Misfits and Criminal Justice, will play the part of the singer, who grew up in poverty in Cardiff’s Tiger Bay. Have a look back at one of her iconic songs with the theme tune from the Bond classic “Goldfinger”.
Tess Daly – Strictly Come Dancing presenter Tess has announced that her debut novel will be published in October this year. The novel, which is entitled “The Camera Never Lies”, is inspired by her own career and tells the story of a model turned breakfast tv presenter. Tess, who has 2 children with husband comedian Vernon Kay, released a book on parenting, “Baby Diaries”, last year. She will be returning together with co-host Bruce Forsyth in a new series of Strictly in the Autumn.
Many people do not realise but there was an early sighting of a young Tess in 2 Duran Duran videos back in 1990. It was 10 years after this that Tess got herself her first television work when she landed the job presenting the competition Find Me A Model, which was a feature on C4’s Big Breakfast.
Although Tess has done a lot of tv work since her first sighting on Big Breakfast it is Strictly Come Dancing that has brought her to her biggest audience and provided the best feedback.
Fiona Bruce – tv presenter Bruce has been sprayed with string from an aerosol can during the filming of an episode of the Antiques Roadshow. Two men attacked her whilst an episode was being filmed at Hartland Abbey, near Bideford, Devon. The two men, who were aged 42 and 32 were arrested for common assault and fined £80 each. The news follows on from the foam pie attack on Rupert Murdoch the other day. Check out Fiona and some of her news presenting chums help raise money for Children in Need back in 2005.
